There is no single better country for gorilla trekking. Rwanda suits travellers with four to six days who want easy access from Kigali, comfortable lodges and short transfers. Uganda suits travellers with a week or more who want a lower permit price (US$800 against US$1,500), a wider choice of trekking areas and the chance to add chimpanzees and a longer safari. In both countries you spend one hour with a habituated family, in a group of no more than eight.

Where Can You Trek Mountain Gorillas?
Mountain gorillas live in only two areas: the Virunga volcanoes, shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. You can trek them in three parks: Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The last full censuses counted about 1,060 mountain gorillas. The 2018 count found 459 in Bwindi, which is more than 40 per cent of the total, and 604 were counted in the Virunga volcanoes in 2015. A new Bwindi census began in 2025.

Choose Rwanda if you prioritise:

Choose Uganda if you prioritise:

Which Country Has Easier Gorilla Trekking?
Rwanda's treks tend to be shorter and the vegetation more open, with many groups reaching the gorillas within a few hours. Uganda's Bwindi is dense and steep, and UWA says treks take two to seven hours. Neither is easy. In both countries the length of the walk depends on where the family moved. How Do the Real Costs Compare, Beyond the Permit?
The permit is only the first line of the bill, and a comparison of permits alone can mislead. The figures below are the per-person group prices on our own tour pages in October 2026, and each includes the gorilla permit. Treat them as examples of how the totals behave, not as a price list.

Two things stand out. First, the Rwanda tour costs about US$1,294 beyond the permit for four days, and the three-day Uganda tour about US$780 beyond its permit for three days, so the cost per night outside the permit is similar. Second, the Uganda prices rise slowly as days are added, which is why a longer Uganda safari can cost less in total than a short Rwanda trip. The cheaper permit is therefore most valuable if you plan to stay longer, and the shorter transfer is most valuable if you plan to stay briefly.

What About Gorilla Trekking in the DR Congo?
Mountain gorillas also live in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and gorilla tourism has been offered there. Security in eastern Congo has been unstable, governments advise against travel to parts of it, and we do not sell trips there. Can You Do Both Countries in One Trip?
Yes, and many travellers do. Kigali and Uganda's Kisoro or Kabale are linked by road, and the two parks sit on either side of the Virunga mountains. What Mistakes Do Travellers Make When Choosing?
- Comparing only the permit. Add transfers, lodges and the time you can spare.
- Assuming one country has more gorillas near the trail. Both have habituated families that visitors reach every day.
- Booking Uganda for four days. The road or flights to Bwindi use up much of the time.
