How Do You Book Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda? A Step-by-Step Plan

To book gorilla trekking in Rwanda, you need a permit from the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), a place to sleep near Volcanoes National Park, a way to reach the park headquarters at Kinigi by 7:00, and a valid passport. The permit costs US$1,500 per person for foreign visitors, groups are limited to eight, and about 80 permits are issued each day, so popular dates fill early. You can book directly through the RDB portal or through a tour operator who handles the permit, the lodge, the driver and the paperwork for you.

This guide gives you the eight steps in order, the common errors that cause permits to be refused at the gate, and the dates to plan around. Rules and fees change, so confirm them with the RDB or your operator before you pay. We checked the details in October 2026. It supports our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

Step 1: How Many Days Do You Need?

Plan at least three nights in Rwanda: the arrival night, the night before the trek near the park, and a night after. Our shortest option is the 4-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour. If you want to add the Dian Fossey hike or golden monkeys, allow five to six days. Longer trips add Akagera or Nyungwe, such as the 5-day gorilla trekking and Akagera Big Five itinerary.

Step 2: When Should You Go and How Early Should You Book?

Rwanda's dry months, June to September and December to February, are the busiest. Permits for those dates, especially July to September, are the first to sell out, so book three to six months ahead when you can. The wetter months, March to May and October to November, are easier to book. The RDB has also advertised a 30% low-season discount on gorilla permits from November to May for travellers who combine the trek with at least two nights in Akagera or Nyungwe, with proof of hotel payment and one paid activity. Check the terms on the RDB low-season discount page, because the rules and the dates may change.

Step 3: Who Needs to Be in the Group?

Each person who treks needs their own permit. The minimum age is 15, so children under 15 cannot join; read gorilla trekking with kids for options. A group is at most eight people. If you travel alone or as a couple, you are put with other trekkers from different operators. Friends or families who want to stay together should book together, and our guide to group gorilla trekking in Rwanda shows how.

Step 4: Choose How to Book

Both routes pay the same permit price, and an operator adds its own fee for the services it provides. When you compare operators, check what is included, who the permit is bought through and what the refund terms say. Our checklist is in how to choose a gorilla trekking tour operator in Rwanda.

Step 5: Pay for the Permit and Provide Exact Details

The RDB issues the permit automatically once the application is complete. You need your full name exactly as in your passport, passport number and nationality, email address and phone number. Bookings are first come, first served, and the system does not hold dates without payment. The name on the permit must match your passport, because the park checks documents at the gate. The RDB states that a wrong, incomplete or false application can lead to denied entry even if you paid and received a permit.

Step 6: Book Your Lodge, Transfers and Airport Pickup

Kigali to Musanze takes about two to two and a half hours by road, and the trek starts at 7:00, so most travellers sleep near the park the night before. Lodges range from simple guesthouses to high-end properties; see the luxury Rwanda safari guide and the best luxury eco-lodges in Rwanda. Book the lodge early, because the good ones near the park fill when the permit dates do.

Step 7: Prepare Documents, Health and Gear

Step 8: Know What Happens on the Day

Arrive at the Kinigi headquarters by 7:00. After the briefing, rangers assign your group to one of the habituated families, a driver takes you to the trailhead, and you walk with trackers. You stay at least seven metres from the gorillas for no more than one hour. Read about the gorilla families you may visit.

What Is the Refund Policy If Something Goes Wrong?

According to the RDB, if you fail to track gorillas all day because the family moved, you may get another chance or a full refund. If you walked all day but never made contact, you may receive 75% of the tracking fee. There is no refund for late arrival, delayed flights, absence, or cancellation for other reasons, so travel insurance matters. Read the current wording on the RDB page before you pay.

What Does a Sample Timeline Look Like?

WhenWhat to do
6 to 12 months beforePick the month and the number of days. Start talking to operators.
4 to 6 months beforeSecure the permit and the lodge. Book flights once the permit is confirmed.
2 to 3 months beforeArrange visas, insurance and vaccinations. Start training for the walk.
1 month beforeBreak in boots, finalise packing and confirm transfers.
The week beforeCheck the weather and your documents. Tell the operator about any cold or illness.

If you are travelling in June to September, shift everything earlier by a few months.

What Do You Do If Your Preferred Date Is Sold Out?

Try the days either side. Ask your operator whether a different gorilla family or a different day is available, and whether another lodge could work. If all dates are full, consider Uganda, where the permits are cheaper and more numerous, or add the golden monkeys and the Dian Fossey hike while you wait for a cancellation. Read how to book a Uganda gorilla permit if you want to switch countries. Avoid paying agents who promise permits on sold-out dates, because the RDB issues them through a single system.

Best for

  • First-time visitors who want a clear process and one contact
  • Travellers with fixed dates who need to secure permits early

May not be ideal for

  • Last-minute planners, because popular dates sell out
  • Visitors who change dates often, since permits are not refundable for cancellations

What Mistakes Do Visitors Make When Booking?

  • Typing the name wrongly. It must match the passport.
  • Booking the permit before flights. Fix the arrival date first.
  • Booking the wrong activity. Golden monkeys and the Dian Fossey hike have separate permits.
  • Leaving no rest day. Keep a free day after the trek.
  • Skipping insurance. Late changes are not refunded.
