A 12-day safari to Tanzania for a safari and Zanzibar is extra special if the trip is planned around contrast. Some days you'll be walking through the narrow streets of Stone Town while the smell of cloves and grilled seafood fills the air. One morning you'll see wildebeest gathering by the Mara River.
People often talk about Tanzania's well-known parks, but what really makes the trip enjoyable is seeing how quickly the country changes around you. If you go on the northern safari itinerary, you'll see a lot of very different landscapes. In Northern Serengeti, the migration season will add to the drama, and in Ngorongoro, the setting inside a huge volcanic caldera will be very different. Olduvai Gorge will add a new dimension to the trip by linking the journey of the animals with the long history of how humans have changed over time. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is important for both its natural and cultural values, according to UNESCO.
Along the world's coastlines, there are places with amazing wildlife and amazing beaches, but sometimes it doesn't feel right to combine the two. It will here. You will slowly move from game drives and remote airstrips to cultural experiences and the Indian Ocean on the safari. This way, you will have time to enjoy each part instead of rushing through a list.
There will also be time on the schedule for optional activities that will make the safari feel more unique. Depending on your interests and the time of your trip, a night game drive, a visit to a Maasai village, horseback riding, or a hot-air balloon safari can add another layer. Hot air balloon safaris are officially available in Tarangire, but the area is best known for its elephants, baobab trees, and the Tarangire River.
If you were thinking about going to other safari destinations because you could get closer to wildlife and have more exciting trekking adventures, Tanzania will be a very different experience. Tanzania has wider savanna landscapes, big migration events, the Ngorongoro ecosystem, and it's easy to connect to Zanzibar. As a result, you'll spend less time at one famous site and more time getting to know different parts of East Africa on a well-planned safari.

One morning you'll see wildebeest gathering by the Mara River.
This is not going to be a very hard-core expedition; it will be a moderate safari vacation. You'll see most of the wildlife from the comfort of a 4x4 safari vehicle, but some days you'll have to get up early, walk on rough ground, and spend time outside in the sun, dust, and changing temperatures. The walking part will be easy, and it will be changed based on where you are and how comfortable you are walking.
Driving distances will be very different. There will be longer parts of the trip on the road around Ngorongoro, Manyara, and Tarangire, but some of the longer transfers will be cut down by domestic flights. For example, it takes about 2.5–3 hours to drive from Arusha to Tarangire in normal conditions. You can also fly directly into the park from Kuro Airstrip.
It would be helpful to have comfortable walking shoes, good mobility, and the ability to get into and out of a safari vehicle on your own. People will only be able to walk in protected areas when it is allowed and after making plans with a ranger or guide.
The plan is good for guests who like to see wildlife, learn about other cultures, and do relaxing things at the beach. The route is good for families with older kids, couples, honeymooners, solo travelers, and small private groups.
