A luxury safari in Tanzania cost is higher than a standard safari because of the lodges, the privacy and the flights, not because of the animals. The fixed park fees are the same for everyone: secondary sources put Serengeti entry at about US$70 to US$84 per adult per day and a concession fee of about US$60 to US$71 per person per night inside the park. On top of that, luxury camps and lodges typically charge per person per night with meals and game drives bundled, private vehicles are charged per day, and flights between airstrips are charged per seat. The total therefore varies widely, and a short mid-luxury trip can cost a fraction of a long stay at the best camps in peak season.
This guide explains where the money goes, how the season changes it and how to spend where it matters. Rates change and sources disagree, so confirm them with your operator. We checked the details in October 2026. To plan the route first, read how to plan a luxury safari in Tanzania.
What Are You Paying For?
| Cost | What to know |
|---|---|
| Park and concession fees | Fixed by the authorities; reported ranges are about US$70 to US$84 a day plus US$60 to US$71 a night in the Serengeti |
| Lodges and camps | The biggest part. Luxury camps usually include meals, drinks and activities in the nightly rate |
| Private vehicle and guide | A 4x4 with a pop-up roof and a private driver-guide, charged per day |
| Flights between airstrips | Charged per seat; they save time and cost more than driving |
| Extras | Hot-air balloon flights, walking safaris, cultural visits |
| Zanzibar finish | Beach lodge nights, transfers and activities |
| Tips and insurance | Budget separately |
How Does the Season Change the Price?
The high season, roughly late June to October, brings the highest nightly rates, because the dry weather and the Mara River crossings draw visitors. January to March, the calving season, is also high. The low season in April and May has the lowest rates, and some camps close. Luxury rooms are limited, so the best places sell out a year ahead for August and September. Choosing a shoulder month can lower the price significantly while keeping excellent wildlife viewing.
Where Does Luxury Add Real Value?
- Location. A camp placed where the herds or the predators are saves hours of driving.
- Privacy. Your own vehicle and guide lets you choose the schedule.
- Fewer moves. Longer stays in fewer places mean more time watching and less time packing.
- Comfort. Good beds, food and a rest after a long day make the following days better.
Where it adds less: a very large room you hardly use, or a lodge far from the area where the animals are.
What Do Our Routes Look Like?
Our Tanzania itineraries use three- to four-star eco-lodges, a private safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, a professional driver-guide, all park and conservation fees and airport transfers. They are the mid-range base that many travellers choose. Examples are the 14-day Great Migration safari with Zanzibar, the 12-day Tanzania parks safari and Zanzibar beach holiday and the 11-day Tanzania Big Five safari. For a higher category of lodge or camp, ask for a quote for your dates and we will price it. We do not publish prices online.
How Can You Control the Cost?
- Choose a shoulder month.
- Use luxury for the most important two or three nights and eco-lodges for the rest.
- Travel in a group of four to share the vehicle.
- Drive some legs rather than flying.
- Book early for the best rooms and rates.
How Does Luxury Compare With a Mid-Range Safari?
The animals are the same. A mid-range private safari in the same park, with a good guide, sees the same herds, lions and elephants. Luxury changes the lodge, the privacy and the comfort. See the cost of a Big Five safari in Tanzania and the cost of a Great Migration safari for the mid-range figures.
How Do Flights Between Parks Change the Total?
Scheduled and charter flights link the Serengeti airstrips with Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. They save a day of driving and give you an aerial view, and they are charged per seat, often with a weight limit of about 15 to 20 kilograms in a soft bag. Charter flights cost much more than scheduled ones, because you pay for the whole aircraft. For most travellers, one flight from the Serengeti to the coast is the most useful, as in our 14-day route, which flies from Kogatende to Zanzibar. Drive the legs that are part of the safari, such as Tarangire to Ngorongoro, and fly only the long ones.
What Is Included in Luxury Camp Rates?
It varies. Many luxury camps quote a per-person, per-night rate that covers accommodation, meals, house drinks, laundry and game drives with a guide. Park and concession fees may be included or added on, and flights, premium drinks, spa treatments and balloon flights are usually extra. Always ask for a written list of inclusions. Two camps with the same nightly rate can differ by hundreds of dollars once you add the fees and activities. Check also whether children are charged at a reduced rate and whether there is a single supplement for solo travellers.
How Do You Plan a Luxury Safari on a Fixed Budget?
- Decide the maximum you want to spend in total, including flights and extras.
- List the three things that matter most, such as location, privacy or the best guide.
- Spend on those three and choose mid-range options for the rest.
- Pick the month; moving a trip by a few weeks can change the price significantly.
- Ask your operator for two quotes: one with your ideal lodges and one with a mix.
That gives you a clear view of where the money goes and what you lose if you cut a night or change a lodge. Read how to plan a luxury safari in Tanzania for the planning steps.
How Do Hot-Air Balloon Flights and Walking Safaris Affect the Budget?
A balloon flight over the Serengeti at dawn is one of the most popular extras, and it is priced separately from the lodge and the park fees, often as a flat fee per person with a breakfast. Walking safaris with an armed ranger are offered at Lake Manyara and in some areas of the Serengeti and are usually cheaper than a balloon flight. Neither is essential, and both are worth considering if they replace a standard game drive rather than adding a day. Ask which activities are included in the nightly rate and which are paid at the camp.
What About Tipping and Gratuities?
Tipping is customary in Tanzania and is a meaningful part of staff income. Operators suggest a daily amount for the driver-guide and a shared amount for camp staff, usually paid in US dollars at the end of each stay. Ask your operator for the current guideline and carry small notes. Budget this as a separate line, because it is not in most quotes. A larger group or a longer stay raises the total, but the per-day amount is modest compared with the rest of a luxury trip.
Best for
- Honeymooners, anniversaries and travellers who value privacy and comfort
- Photographers who want the best positions and flexible hours
May not be ideal for
- Travellers on a tight budget; a mid-range private safari offers the same wildlife
What Mistakes Do Travellers Make?
- Paying for luxury in the wrong place. Location matters more than the room.
- Booking too late. The best camps sell out.
- Not asking what is included. Drinks and activities vary.
- Forgetting flights and tips.
