A good Rwanda itinerary without gorilla trekking is easy to build, because the country is small and packed with other things to see. Akagera gives you a Big Five savanna safari, Nyungwe has chimpanzees and a canopy walk, Lake Kivu offers beaches and the Congo Nile Trail, and Kigali adds museums, food and craft markets. Five days is enough for two highlights, seven days lets you pair a savanna with a forest and a lake, and ten days covers most of the country at a comfortable pace. The gorilla permit costs US$1,500 for foreign visitors according to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), so leaving it out also changes the budget.

Below are three plans, with drive times, the main activities and what to expect each day. Distances and fees change, so confirm them with your operator. We checked the details in October 2026. If you want more ideas first, read things to do in Rwanda besides gorilla trekking.

Who Should Visit Rwanda Without Trekking Gorillas?

There are good reasons. Permits sell out for the busiest months, the cost may be beyond your budget, you may have trekked gorillas before, or you may have a family member under 15 who cannot join. Rwanda has more to offer than most visitors realise, and the other activities cost far less than a gorilla permit. If you are unsure, read is gorilla trekking worth it for the trade-offs.

What Does a 5-Day Itinerary Look Like?

This plan pairs Kigali with Akagera and a night on a lake. It suits first-time visitors with limited time.

DayPlan
1Arrive in Kigali. City tour, the Kigali Genocide Memorial and Kimironko Market.
2Drive about two and a half hours to Akagera. Afternoon game drive.
3Morning game drive and a boat trip on Lake Ihema. Overnight in the park.
4Drive to Lake Muhazi for a relaxed afternoon by the water.
5Return to Kigali for departure.

Our 4-day Big Five safari in Akagera and Lake Muhazi and the 6-day Akagera Big Five safari and Kigali city tour follow this pattern. See can you see the Big Five in Rwanda.

What Does a 7-Day Itinerary Look Like?

This plan adds Nyungwe, the best forest in Rwanda for chimpanzees, and Lake Kivu.

DayPlan
1Arrive in Kigali; city tour and museum.
2Drive to Akagera (about 2.5 hours). Afternoon game drive.
3Full day in Akagera: drives and a boat trip.
4Return to Kigali, then continue to Huye or toward Nyungwe.
5Early chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe; canopy walk in the afternoon.
6Drive along the tea country to Lake Kivu; boat or kayak at sunset.
7Return to Kigali for departure.

The Kigali to Nyungwe drive takes five to six hours, so we suggest splitting it. Read the Nyungwe travel guide, the chimpanzee trekking cost guide and the 6-day chimpanzee tracking and Akagera Big Five safari.

What Does a 10-Day Itinerary Look Like?

This plan covers savanna, forest, lake and volcano country without gorillas.

DaysPlan
1Kigali: city tour, memorial and craft market.
2 to 3Akagera: game drives and a boat trip.
4 to 5Nyungwe: chimpanzees and the canopy walk.
6 to 8Lake Kivu and the Congo Nile Trail: walk or cycle two or three stages, with a village evening.
9Musanze: golden monkeys, caves or the Dian Fossey hike.
10Return to Kigali for departure.

Can You Add Other Primates Instead of Gorillas?

Yes. Golden monkeys live in Volcanoes National Park and the permit is US$100 for foreign adults with a minimum age of 12; see the golden monkey permit guide. Chimpanzees live in Nyungwe. The 4-day golden monkey tracking and Lake Kivu tour is a short route that keeps the budget low.

When Is the Best Time to Go?

June to September and December to February are the driest months, which suit Akagera and walking. The wetter months, March to May and October to November, are greener and quieter, with more mud in Nyungwe and on the trail. Lake Kivu is pleasant all year.

What Does Each Itinerary Cost Compared With a Gorilla Trip?

The gorilla permit alone is US$1,500 for a foreign adult. A trip without it replaces that single payment with several smaller ones: Akagera park entry from US$100 for one day or night, a boat trip at US$35 to US$45, golden monkey tracking at US$100, and a Dian Fossey hike at US$75, all taken from the park and RDB pages. Add lodging, transport and a guide, and a week without gorillas can cost noticeably less than a week with them, while keeping the same lodges and vehicle. Ask for a quote with the activities you want so that you can compare like with like.

How Do You Choose Where to Sleep?

Choose a base for each region and stay at least two nights. In Akagera, a lodge or tented camp inside the park saves time on the dawn drive. In Nyungwe, look near Gisakura for tea-field views and an easy start for the canopy walk. At Lake Kivu, pick a lodge on the water in Karongi or Rubavu. In Kigali, a central hotel makes the city tour simple. Our guides to the best luxury eco-lodges in Rwanda and Nyungwe list options at different price levels.

What Should You Book First?

Fix your arrival and departure dates, then secure the activities with limited places: chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe, golden monkeys if you want them, and lodging in Akagera and near the lake. Leave Kigali and the drives flexible. Many travellers also add the Congo Nile Trail late in the planning, so check availability of guides and bikes. Read how many days you need for the Congo Nile Trail.

What Is the Pace of Each Plan?

The five-day plan is easy, with two long drives of about two and a half hours. The seven-day plan has one long day to Nyungwe and is manageable if you split it with a night at Huye. The ten-day plan has three long transfers but also two rest days at the lake. If your group includes children or older travellers, leave out one region rather than shorten each stay. A relaxed trip makes more memories than a crowded one.

What About Kigali Before or After the Trip?

Kigali is a good place to start and to finish. A half day covers the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which gives essential context for the country, and a visit to the Kimironko Market or a craft centre. A second half day can include the Kandt House Museum, a coffee tasting and an evening in a restaurant with live music. Read our Kigali city tour guide for more, and is Rwanda safe to travel for the practical side.

Best for

  • Travellers on a smaller budget than a gorilla trip allows
  • Repeat visitors, and families with children under 15
  • Active travellers who enjoy hiking, cycling and wildlife

May not be ideal for

  • Visitors for whom gorillas are the main reason to come to Rwanda
  • Travellers who dislike long drives; Nyungwe is five to six hours from Kigali

What Mistakes Do Visitors Make When Planning?

  • Trying to see everything in five days. Choose two highlights.
  • Underestimating the drives. Nyungwe is far.
  • Skipping Kigali. It adds history and food for little cost.
  • Forgetting rain gear. Showers come in any month.
