Serengeti vs Ngorongoro: Which Is Better for a First Safari?

Travel tips

For a first safari in Tanzania, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater do different jobs, and most travellers combine them. Serengeti National Park is huge, about 14,750 square kilometres of plains, and is where the Great Migration moves, so you can spend several days following the herds and big cats. Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano with a floor of about 260 square kilometres that holds a dense mix of wildlife in one day, including black rhino, which is rare elsewhere. If you only have time for one, choose the Serengeti for variety and the migration, and the crater for a compact, high-density day.

This comparison explains the differences by wildlife, landscape, crowds, time and cost, and how to combine the two. Park rules and fees change, so confirm them before booking. We checked the details in October 2026. It extends our Serengeti safari guide.

How Do the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Compare?

LandscapeOpen plains, kopjes, rivers and woodlandA volcanic caldera with grassland, marsh, forest and a soda lake
MigrationYes, in a loop through the yearNo, but calving happens on the Ndutu plains nearby
WildlifeBig cats, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and the herdsHigh density of lions, hyenas, buffalo, elephants, hippos and black rhino
Time neededThree to five daysOne day (visits on the crater floor are time-limited)
FeelWide-open and wildCompact and dramatic, with more vehicles

Which Is Better for Wildlife?

It depends on what you want. The crater concentrates animals into a small area, so a single day can show you lions, buffalo, elephants and hyenas, and it is one of the best places in East Africa to look for black rhino, although sightings are never guaranteed. The Serengeti offers more space and more variety over several days, with leopards in the trees, cheetahs on the plains and the herds. Leopards and rhinos are rare in both, so treat the Big Five as a possibility, not a promise. Read our Big Five safari guide.

Which Is Better for the Great Migration?

The Serengeti. The herds spend the year in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Calving is in the south around Ndutu (January to March), the river crossings are in the north (July to October). The crater has resident wildebeest, but not the migration. Read the month-by-month migration guide.

Which Is Less Crowded?

The Serengeti, because of its size, although the central Seronera area and popular crossing points can get busy. The crater is smaller, so many vehicles descend at the same time, and visits are limited in time. An early start helps.

How Do They Compare on Cost?

Both charge park or conservation-area fees set by their authorities, and the crater has a separate crater service fee per vehicle. These fees change, so ask for an itemised quote. The lodge level and whether you fly between parks affect the total more than the choice between the two. Our 7-day Serengeti wildebeest migration tour was priced from US$2,064 per person at the group rate in October 2026.

How Do You Combine Them?

The usual route is Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and back. Four nights in the Serengeti and one night near the crater make a good first safari. Examples from our tours are the 9-day Tanzania Great Migration safari, the 11-day Tanzania Big Five safari and the 5-day Tanzania cultural experiences tour, a shorter option.

Best for

Serengeti: travellers who want the migration, big cats and space. Ngorongoro: travellers with limited time, families and anyone who wants a compact day. Both: first-time safari travellers with five days or more.

May not be ideal for

Travellers with only a long weekend. Both need long drives or flights. Travellers who dislike early starts.

What Mistakes Do First-Time Visitors Make?

  • Skipping the crater to save a day. It is one of the easiest days for wildlife.
  • Giving the Serengeti only one night. It is too big for that.
  • Assuming the crater has the migration. It does not.
  • Booking the wrong month for the herds. Match the month to the area.

Frequently Asked Questions: Serengeti vs Ngorongoro

Which is better for a first safari?

Combine both. If you must choose one, the Serengeti offers more variety and the migration.

How many days do I need?

One day for the crater and three to five for the Serengeti.

Can I see the Big Five?

Possibly, but rhino and leopard are rare. Do not expect all five.
