Overview

When travelers hear about the great wildebeest migration, they usually think of the Maasai Mara. But the Tanzanian side of the story is just as important. The Serengeti is about 1.5 million hectares big and is part of a larger ecosystem that helps more than a million wildebeest and many zebras and gazelles move around every year. Here, the migration takes place on large fields and in different parts of the Serengeti before many of the herds continue to Kenya. When compared to safari spots that are mostly known for their resident wildlife or water beauty, Tanzania lets you see a natural show that is shaped by movement, rain, grazing, and survival. Because the rhythm changes, a migration safari is less like checking off places to see and more like watching nature decide what to do next.

This safari will have both the feel of a typical northern Tanzanian safari and a strong focus on the migration. In Ngorongoro, you can see the wildlife including big 5 of the northern circuit. In the middle and northern Serengeti, you can watch wildlife for longer periods of time and get a better view of how the herds move. Guests in the northern Serengeti usually see the Mara River crossing  from mid-July to mid-October. However, the exact dates rely on rainfall and how the animals behave in groups, not on a set calendar.

One thing that will stay the same is the comfort. After long hours of walking on dusty trails and watching animals, you will return to your lodge where you can rest, eat, and get ready for another day in the bush.

Accommodation information will be sent to you after the booking based on availability and the confirmed travel times. As a result, there will be a well-paced safari with wildlife, changing landscapes, and the unique chance to be there as one of the world's most remarkable natural movements happens.

Difficulty Level

This safari will have a moderate total difficulty level mainly due to the long road transfers and the several hours spent on uneven safari tracks. There isn't any hard climbing planned, so the physical challenge will come from driving for long periods of time, getting in and out of the car during game drives, and driving on rough parts of unpaved roads. Being able to move around a bit will improve the experience.

The days spent traveling between Arusha, the Serengeti, and the northern migration area can be long, but planned stops and seeing wildlife will break up the journey. The central part of the northern Serengeti is great for tourists who like to take their time on game drives and enjoy the changing scenery. People who are sensitive to long car rides should discuss the route and any possible changes before confirming.

The tour is ideal for couples, families, single travelers, and small private groups who like to be active while traveling outside. Families with younger children should check with the lodges and safari companies they are considering booking with to see what their age restrictions are.

When the weather changes, the northern Serengeti tracks may get rougher. It may feel cool in the mornings and warmer in the afternoons.

So, the best way to prepare for a safari is to wear clothes that are comfortable to move around in, be patient, and let the animals set the pace.
