Gorilla Trekking for Seniors: Fitness, Preparation and What to Ask

Gorilla trekking for seniors is possible: neither Rwanda nor Uganda sets a maximum age, and many people in their 60s and 70s trek. What matters is fitness and health, because the walk to the gorillas lasts from 30 minutes to four hours or more on steep, muddy ground at altitude. A porter, good boots, a walking stick and a few weeks of uphill walking make it manageable. Speak to your doctor first, and tell your operator about any health condition so they can pass the information on.

This guide covers the preparation, the support available on the day and the questions to ask. Rules change, so confirm them with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or your operator. We checked the details in October 2026. It supports our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

There is no maximum age for trekking.

Is There an Age Limit for Seniors?

There is a minimum age of 15 but no maximum age. If you are fit and well, your age alone does not stop you. Rangers can refuse entry to anyone who is ill, because gorillas catch human illnesses easily. See our age limit guide.

How Hard Is the Trek for Older Travellers?

The walk is the demanding part. Trails are steep and slippery, and the air is thinner at altitude. Some groups reach the gorillas in 30 minutes, and others walk for four hours or more. Rangers assign gorilla families on the day, and your operator can ask them to consider fitness, although the final choice is theirs. Read the details in our gorilla trekking tips.

How Should You Prepare?

  • Walk uphill for two to three hours at a time for several weeks, in the boots you will wear.
  • Practise with a loaded daypack and a walking stick.
  • Spend a night near the park before the trek. See the Volcanoes National Park guide.
  • Pack well: waterproof boots, long trousers, a rain jacket, gloves. See the packing list.
  • Bring enough of your regular medicine for the whole trip, and keep it in your hand luggage.

What Help Is Available on Trek Day?

Porters carry your daypack and give you a hand on steep or slippery sections, and the fee supports local families. Simple walking sticks are usually available at the trailhead. Rangers and trackers set a pace you can manage and take breaks. Some operators can arrange extra assistance for travellers with limited mobility; ask early, because it depends on the terrain and the family assigned.

What Should You Ask Your Doctor and Your Operator?

  • Your doctor: is it safe to walk several hours at altitude with your heart, lungs or joints? What about malaria prevention and vaccinations?
  • Your operator: can you request a shorter hike, what assistance is possible, how close is medical care, and what does the insurance need to cover?

Travel insurance with medical cover and evacuation is essential. See our guide to safety in Rwanda.

Best for

May not be ideal for

  • Travellers who cannot walk for several hours on uneven ground
  • Those with serious heart or breathing conditions, unless their doctor agrees

What Mistakes Do Older Travellers Make?

  • Not training. Do not rely on gym fitness alone.
  • Leaving out the porter. It is a small cost with a large benefit.
  • Not telling the operator about health.
  • Planning a tight schedule after the trek. Allow a rest day.
