What You Will Do on This Hadzabe and Datoga Safari

The Hadzabe live around Lake Eyasi and are one of the few groups in Tanzania that still live mainly by hunting and gathering. A visit starts early, around dawn, when the men leave camp to hunt with bows and arrows, and you walk with them for a while, watching how they track and what they carry. You also see how the group gathers, cooks and shares food. A community guide translates and explains, and you can ask questions. Our guide on how to visit the Hadzabe in Tanzania explains how to do it respectfully, and the best Hadzabe cultural tour from Arusha compares ways to reach them.

The Datoga are a different community, and we keep the two visits distinct. They are herders, and the community is known for its blacksmiths, who make tools and jewellery from metal. You visit a homestead, see how the work is done and talk with the people who live there. The wildlife part of the trip balances this: Tarangire's elephants and baobabs on the first day and Ngorongoro Crater, where animals live in a bowl a few kilometres across. Read where to experience genuine Maasai culture in Tanzania to put the three communities in context. Browse the cultural experiences page and the Tanzania destination page.

How Hard Is the Safari?

Moderate. The cultural day starts before sunrise, and the walk with the Hadzabe is on uneven ground in warm weather, though the pace is easy. The roads around Lake Eyasi are rough and dusty. The wildlife days are done from the vehicle and are easy. Please tell us about any mobility problem, because the cultural visits involve some walking and standing. We also ask guests to stay with the guide, ask before taking photographs and accept that the hosts may decline.

Best Time to Go

June to October is the driest season, with the best roads and the best game viewing in Tarangire, and January and February are also dry. The long rains, from about March to May, can make the Eyasi roads difficult and the visit harder to organise, so we recommend avoiding them. The Hadzabe's hunting day is possible in every season, but the experience depends on conditions.

Who This Trip Suits

This tour suits curious travellers who want conversations as well as sightings, including couples, friends and families with teenagers who are comfortable with long, dusty drives.
