Overview

This 5 day Congo Nile Trail tour covers two guided sections of Rwanda's long lakeside route, not the whole trail. You drive from Kigali to Rubavu, spend a lakeside night, then hike or cycle toward Karongi over two days, with a vehicle following for luggage and for anyone who wants a rest. You choose on each section whether to walk or ride, so a group with different fitness levels can stay together, and a generous buffer on the last day keeps the drive back to Kigali relaxed.

What You Will Do on This Congo Nile Trail Tour

The Congo Nile Trail runs for roughly 230 kilometres along the ridge above Lake Kivu, following the divide between the Congo and Nile river systems. Doing all of it takes more days than most itineraries allow, so we built this version around two of the sections that give you the most: climbing out of the Rubavu area into coffee and banana farms with the lake appearing and disappearing below, then a second day continuing toward Karongi along the hills. You decide each morning whether to walk or ride, and your guide adjusts the length of each section to the weather and the group. See our guide on how many days you need for the Congo Nile Trail if you want to extend later.

What makes the trail different from a long drive is what happens in between: stops at small trading centres, a coffee break with a farming family, a break at a viewpoint, a swim or a canoe ride if the lake is calm. The guide is local and knows who to introduce you to. Our article on what the Congo Nile Trail costs explains why guided sections with a support vehicle suit most travellers better than going solo. Browse the Rwanda destination page and the cultural experiences page.

How Hard Is the Congo Nile Trail?

The sections are hilly, with climbs and descents on gravel, dirt and village roads, and the heat builds by midday. For walking you need to be comfortable with four to six hours on your feet. For cycling, you should be happy on a mountain bike on loose surfaces. The support vehicle follows each day, so you can ride in it whenever you want, and we start early to avoid the sun. If you have a heart, knee or breathing condition, tell us before you book. The trail is not technical.

Best Time to Go

June to September and December to February are drier, with firmer paths and clearer views over the lake. March to May and October to November are wetter, and sections can be muddy, so we sometimes swap a walk for the vehicle. Early mornings are best in every season, because the ridge heats up by midday.

Who This Trip Suits

This tour suits active couples, friends and families with teenagers who want a different Rwanda from the gorilla circuit. It is also a good add-on after a gorilla trek, and you can combine it with our 4-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour. If you want a longer route, look at the 6-day Congo Nile Trail hiking tour with the Nyungwe canopy walk or the 8-day gravel cycling tour.

Plan Your Trip

Tell us whether you prefer walking or cycling, and how many hours you are comfortable with each day. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm your lakeside accommodation after booking. Read the guide to the trail, night fishing and tea on Lake Kivu and the best things to do around Lake Kivu.
