Uganda has been labeled as one of Africa’s great places for primate experiences, but the appeal becomes much clearer when the safari goes beyond the forest. Uganda chimpanzee tracking safaris here will take you from the dense greenery of Kibale to open savanna, the Victoria Nile and the papyrus wetlands of Lake Victoria, creating a richer contrast than a safari built around one landscape alone. Kibale is highly recommended for chimpanzee tracking, and Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth offer very different wildlife experiences along the way.

Our itinerary will be centered on the Kibale Forest, where the day will change from travel to listening. Before movement reveals a chimpanzee community, calls may come from somewhere beyond the trees, turning an ordinary forest path into a very personal wildlife moment. UWA says that a typical chimpanzee tracking visit lasts about two to five hours, When the chimpanzees are found, visitors spend a maximum of one hour with them.

Then the scene changes again. Murchison Falls National Park will offer riverine wildlife viewing, and Queen Elizabeth National Park will slow down the safari around the Kazinga Channel where hippos, elephants, buffaloes and waterbirds gather near the water. The mix of walking in the forest, game viewing and boat safaris will ensure that the week is varied, without feeling rushed each day.

The last morning will be a different atmosphere at Mabamba Bay Wetland where local guides will look for the distinctive Shoebill in the papyrus channels. Mabamba is a large wetland on Lake Victoria and an internationally important conservation area that supports over 300 species of birds.

Difficulty Level 

Overall this safari will be Moderate. The main physical activity will be chimpanzee tracking in Kibale where forest trails can be uneven, humid and muddy especially after rain. Chimpanzee  tracking can take around two to five hours and currently participants need to be at least 16 years old. The terrain is reasonable for reasonably fit travelers but you should be prepared to walk for several hours through natural forest without paved paths.

The game drives and boat cruises will require little physical effort, but there will be long road transfers on Day 2 and 3. It’s one of the longer travel sections from the Murchison area to Kibale so patience and comfortable clothing will make a difference. On Day 7, the Kasese-Entebbe flight will cut another substantial road transfer.

Standard chimpanzee tracking is not suitable for wheelchair users because of the forest terrain; travelers with mobility limitations should inform us when booking. You’ll need to be fit enough to walk over roots, slopes and wet ground and sturdy footwear will be essential.
