Overview

This 8 day Tanzania family safari is planned around how children actually travel. You get a private 4x4 with fuel and a driver guide, family-friendly lodges, a morning game drive rather than a dawn-to-dusk schedule, and a Maasai cultural visit that you can include or skip. It covers Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti in the usual order, with the longest transfer broken into stages and a flight from the Serengeti back to Arusha where one operates.

What You Will Do on This Tanzania Family Safari

Children enjoy safaris that are full of small things. They like the elephants at Tarangire, because they are close and large, and they like the crater because animals are everywhere, which keeps the game drives interesting. They also like pools and playing at the lodge. We therefore plan mornings for the vehicle and afternoons for the lodge, and keep each park to a single main outing a day. The roof of the 4x4 lifts, so children can stand and see without being lifted. Read family safari in Tanzania: best parks, lodges and ages for children and the family safari cost guide.

The Maasai visit on day four is optional, and we decide with you whether it suits the children. It is arranged with a local host and keeps the conversation simple: how the family lives, what the cattle mean and what a day looks like. Read whether a Maasai cultural visit is suitable for families before you decide. Browse the game drives page and the Tanzania destination page.

How Hard Is the Safari?

Easy. The game drives are from the vehicle and there is no hiking. Some days involve three to five hours on rough roads, and the transfers to and from the Serengeti are longer. We break the journey and bring snacks. Children under about six or seven may find the full route tiring, and we recommend shortening it for them. Tell us the children's ages and any health needs when you enquire.

Best Time to Go

June to October is the dry season, with the best game viewing and the most reliable weather, and school holiday periods fall in the busy part of it, so book early. January and February are also dry. The long rains from March to May are green and quiet. We choose lodges based on your dates and the children's needs.

Who This Trip Suits

This tour suits families with children who can enjoy a few hours of animal watching, multi-generation groups and anyone who wants a gentler first safari. For a shorter trip, see the 5-day Lake Manyara and Maasai culture safari. For a longer version with Zanzibar, see the 8-day Tanzania family safari and Zanzibar beach holiday.

Plan Your Trip

Tell us the children's ages, any dietary needs and what excites them, and we will plan the days. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm lodges once you book. Malaria is present in Tanzania, so speak to a doctor before you travel. Read the Tanzania safari packing list and what to check before booking a Tanzania safari.
