This 6 day KwaZulu-Natal safari and Zulu cultural heritage tour puts people first and animals second. You travel from Durban to a locally hosted Zulu cultural experience and a heritage site with a knowledgeable guide, then move to a Big Five reserve near Hluhluwe for an early game drive, and finish at St Lucia with a boat cruise on the estuary. The route is by road, with a driver guide and a private 4x4 with fuel, and the days leave time for conversation.
KwaZulu-Natal is the homeland of the Zulu people, and its history is present in the hills, rivers and towns. The cultural half of this journey goes beyond a short stop at a roadside village. You spend a day with a locally hosted experience, which gives you time to sit, listen and ask questions, and a second day at a heritage site with a local guide who knows the history. We choose the site with you, based on your interests and the day. Read which Zulu cultural village is the best to visit for what to look for in a good one.

The wildlife half follows. A reserve near Hluhluwe is home to the Big Five, and an early game drive gives you the best of the day, with a long rest afterwards. St Lucia, on the edge of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, offers an estuary cruise, where hippos and crocodiles are the stars. Read how to combine iSimangaliso Wetland Park with a Big Five safari. Browse the cultural experiences page and the South Africa destination page.
The Zulu cultural experience is arranged with local hosts who decide what is shown and how, and the fees are paid to them. The guides at the heritage site are local. We choose hosts who want to share their story and who set clear terms for visitors, and we ask you to follow the guide, ask before photographing people and listen as much as you talk.

Easy. The cultural visits involve walking on uneven ground and sitting on the ground or low seats, and the safari and the boat cruise are done from a vehicle or a boat. The longest drive is about three to four hours. Winter mornings can be cold on an open game vehicle, and summer afternoons are hot and humid. Tell us if you have mobility or health needs.

The dry winter months, from about May to September, are the best for game drives, with thinner bush and cooler weather. The summer months, roughly November to March, are hot, humid and green, with many birds and afternoon storms. Cultural experiences work in every season, and we adjust the timing to the weather.
This journey suits travellers who like to hear a place's history from the people who live there: couples, families with older children and friends. It is also a good fit for travellers who want a short South Africa trip without flying. For a pure wildlife and wetland trip, see the 6-day South Africa safari and wetland adventure. For the Kruger area, see the 4-day Kruger National Park Big Five safari.
Tell us what you want to learn and which period of history interests you, and we will choose the heritage site. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm accommodation after booking. Read the best park for the Big Five in South Africa and the best national parks in South Africa.
