This 5 day Uganda family safari uses Lake Mburo National Park, the closest savannah park to Entebbe, and keeps each day to one main activity. You drive to the park, take a family game drive, cruise on the lake, go on an easy guided walk or relax at the lodge, and return to Entebbe with a generous buffer for your flight. A private 4x4 with fuel and one driver guide means you can stop, shorten or lengthen any outing as the children need.
Lake Mburo is a small park with a lot of variety: rolling savannah, acacia woodland, wetlands and a lake. Zebras, impala, topi and buffalo are common, and you can often see them from the road before you enter. Children enjoy it because the animals are close and easy to find, and because one or two outings a day are enough. A morning game drive is best for energy and light. The boat cruise on the lake follows, and it is a calm way to see hippos, crocodiles and birds. Our guide to whether the Kazinga Channel boat cruise is suitable for families gives similar advice for boat trips.

Day four is deliberately open. A guided nature walk with a qualified guide is one of the few safari activities that families can do on foot, and it shows smaller things that a vehicle drives past: tracks, insects, birds and plants. If the family prefers, spend the day by the pool, watch animals from the lodge and play. The route keeps driving to a minimum, and we put the long road days at the beginning and end. Read gorilla trekking with kids for what to do with children too young for primates. Browse the game drives page and the Uganda destination page.
Easy. Almost everything is done from the vehicle or the boat, and the walk is short and flat. The long part is the road: four to five hours from Entebbe, which most children handle with snacks and a few breaks, and we stop where there is something to look at. The walk and the boat have minimum age and safety rules, which we confirm when you book. Tell us the ages of the children so that we can plan the days.

The dry months, June to August and December to February, are the easiest for game viewing. The wet seasons, March to May and September to November, are green and quieter, and rain falls in the afternoon more than in the morning. Lake Mburo works in every month, and families with school holidays can usually find a good date.
This tour suits families with children who can enjoy a few hours of animal watching, grandparents travelling with grandchildren, and anyone who wants an easy first safari. It is not for travellers who want gorillas or big-cat sightings as the main reason to come. For primates, see the 7-day Uganda gorilla trekking tour for travellers of 15 and older. For a slower Uganda trip, see the 6-day Uganda slow safari.
Tell us the children's ages and any dietary needs, and we will confirm family rooms and the activities for each age. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm lodges after booking. Read Uganda safari tours from Entebbe Airport and family safari in Uganda: wildlife and cultural experiences.
