This 6 day Uganda slow safari is built for travellers who would rather see less and enjoy it more. You spend two nights at Lake Mburo National Park for wildlife and an easy walk, then two nights on Lake Bunyonyi, where the days are for canoeing and village life. A private 4x4 with fuel and a driver guide covers the route, and on the last day we use a flight from a nearby airstrip where one operates, so you are not facing a long road return before an international flight.
Lake Mburo gives you a classic safari in miniature, with zebras, impala, buffalo and hippos, and the park allows guided walks, so you can see the savannah at walking pace. The mornings are for animals and the afternoons for lunch and rest. Then you travel south to Lake Bunyonyi, a terraced lake with islands that sits in the highlands near the Rwanda border, where the pace drops again. You can paddle a canoe across the water, visit a village with a local host or do nothing. Our Lake Bunyonyi travel guide covers the lake in detail.

A dugout canoe trip.
What sets this tour apart from a standard Uganda route is what we leave out: no gorilla trek, no long game-drive days and no days that begin before dawn. The village visit is arranged with a local host who decides what to show and what to explain, and you can ask questions. If you later decide you want gorillas, the route sits close to Bwindi and Mgahinga, and we can extend it. Browse the Uganda destination page, the cultural experiences page and the Bwindi vs Mgahinga guide.
Easy. The two drives of four to five hours are the main effort, and we plan stops. At Lake Mburo, the walk is short and flat. At Lake Bunyonyi the paths are hilly and can be steep and slippery after rain, and canoeing needs only a willingness to sit. If you have limited mobility, tell us, and we adjust the village visit and the canoe trip.

On a forest walk.
June to August and December to February are the driest months, with the best game viewing and the easiest paths. March to May and September to November are wetter and greener, and the lake is often calm and misty in the mornings. Bunyonyi's highland climate means cool evenings in every month.
This tour suits couples, older travellers and anyone who finds rushed itineraries tiring. It is a good second trip to Uganda after gorillas. For a faster route, see the 10-day Uganda primates and wildlife expedition. For a more active trip, see the 5-day Uganda family safari.
Tell us how much you want to do each day and we will set the schedule. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm accommodation once you book. The last day relies on a suitable flight from a nearby airstrip, and if none operates we extend the tour for a road return and tell you before you book. Read Uganda safari tours from Entebbe Airport.
