Pour la comparaison détaillée des parcs, lisez is Bwindi or Mgahinga better for gorilla trekking.
| Destination | Distance relative depuis Kigali |
|---|---|
| Mgahinga (via Kisoro) | Le plus proche |
| Rushaga et Nkuringo (Bwindi sud) | Plus long |
- A valid passport, with enough empty pages.
- The right visa for Uganda, and if you want to return to Rwanda, a multiple-entry Rwanda visa or an East Africa Tourist Visa where it applies. Read our visa guide for East Africa.
- Yellow fever vaccination evidence if requested, and the other requirements at the time.
- A vehicle and driver arranged in advance if you cross by road.
How Many Gorilla Groups Does Each Park Have?
Mgahinga has one habituated group, Nyakagezi. Bwindi has about 18 to 23 across its four sectors, according to different sources. More groups mean more permits and more choice of terrain. Read how many gorilla families are in Bwindi.
How Do the Permits Compare?
Uganda's standard permit is widely reported at US$800 for foreign non-residents, with a US$600 low-season price announced for April, May and November. Rwanda's is US$1,500 according to the Rwanda Development Board. Read the Uganda cost guide and how to book a Uganda permit.
Which Park Suits a Short Trip?
For three to four days from Kigali, Mgahinga or the southern Bwindi sectors are the only realistic Ugandan options. Our 6-day Mgahinga gorilla trek and golden monkey tour runs this route and adds golden monkeys. Mgahinga also has the Batwa Trail and volcano hikes.
Which Park Suits a Longer Trip?
If you have five days or more, Bwindi offers more groups and sectors. The 3-day Bwindi tour is short, and the 5-day gorilla trek in Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth safari and the 12-day primate trekking safari in Uganda and Rwanda use the time well. For a combined route, see the 8-day gorilla trekking and Big Five safari in Rwanda and Uganda.
What About Doing Rwanda Instead?
If you have two or three days, Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is only about two and a half hours from Kigali. The permit is more expensive, but the journey is short. Read Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking.
What Does a Realistic Four-Day Plan From Kigali Look Like?
A four-day trip to Mgahinga works like this. Day one is the drive from Kigali toward Musanze and across the border at Cyanika to Kisoro, with an afternoon at your lodge. Day two is the gorilla trek from the Ntebeko gate, then a rest. Day three is a second activity, such as golden monkey tracking, the Batwa Trail or a volcano hike. Day four is the drive back to Kigali. The same schedule for the southern Bwindi sectors adds a longer drive on day one and day four, so the trek has less buffer. Because border queues and road works vary, build a spare half day into any plan, and avoid booking a flight out of Kigali on the afternoon of your last day.
How Do You Handle Your Vehicle and the Border?
The simplest way is to use one vehicle and driver from Kigali, through the border and on to the park, with the paperwork handled by your operator. Vehicles registered in Rwanda need the right documents to enter Uganda, and some operators change vehicles at the border, so ask how it works. Carry your passport, visa documents and your permit confirmation in your hand luggage, and keep cash in small US dollar notes for incidental costs. Leave extra time at the crossing in the high season.
Is It Better to Fly to Entebbe Instead?
If you want Bwindi's northern sectors, Buhoma or Ruhija, or you plan to add Queen Elizabeth National Park, starting in Entebbe and flying or driving to the south-west can make sense. If you want the southern sectors or Mgahinga, starting in Kigali is usually shorter. The decision is a matter of route, not of price. Our 12-day primate trekking safari starts in Entebbe and ends in Kigali so that no leg is repeated, and the 5-day gorilla trek in Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth safari follows a Uganda-only plan.
What Do You Do About Return Flights and Insurance?
If you cross by road, make your flight home from the capital where you finish, and leave at least one full day between the trek and your flight. Choose travel insurance that covers delays, medical care and evacuation, and read what it says about trips that cross borders. If you plan to return to Rwanda, check the visa rules in advance so that you do not need a second visa at the border. Read our East Africa visa guide.
What Do You Eat and Where Do You Sleep Near Each Park?
Kisoro, the base for Mgahinga, has simple guesthouses, mid-range lodges and a few high-end properties, with restaurants serving local and international food. Around Bwindi, nearly all meals are at your lodge, with packed lunches for trek days. Rooms near the trailheads are limited, so book them as soon as the permit is confirmed. Many lodges are in remote locations with limited electricity or mobile signal, so tell your family how to reach you and download maps and documents before you arrive.
What Is the Weather Like?
Both parks are cool and wet. Mornings are fresh, rain showers are common at any time of year and the volcanoes around Mgahinga are often in cloud. The driest months are June to September and December to February. Pack for rain even in the dry season, and bring a warm layer for the evening. Read the best time to visit Bwindi for the month-by-month pattern.

Quelles erreurs les voyageurs commettent-ils ?
- Underestimating the drive. Allow a full day to reach Bwindi.
- Forgetting the visa. Check before you travel.
- Booking Mgahinga and expecting many groups. It has one.
- Not allowing a rest day. Long drives and treks combine badly.
