A luxury Rwanda safari package normally includes the gorilla permit, high-end lodges or villas, a private guide and vehicle, airport transfers, most meals, park fees and a few signature experiences such as a private game drive or a lake sunset. It usually excludes international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips and some drinks. Because a luxury package bundles many separate items, the quickest way to compare two offers is to line up the inclusions, not the headline price.
This guide lists what is usually in and out, shows what our own luxury tour covers, and gives a checklist you can use with any operator. Inclusions change by package, so confirm them in writing. We checked the details in October 2026. For the gorilla trek itself, read our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda. For the cost side, see how much a private luxury Rwanda safari costs.

What Does Our 5-Day Luxury Tour Include?
Our 5-day luxury gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda and Lake Kivu lists luxury accommodation in five-star lodges and villas, private transfers in an upscale vehicle and the internal flight, a private expert guide, all park entry fees and the gorilla trekking permit, all meals as per the itinerary, and a refillable water bottle. The route includes a gorilla trek with a private guide, the memorial tomb of Dian Fossey, a conservation community visit, a sunset on Lake Kivu, a flight to Akagera for a private evening game drive and a spa treatment on the last day. For a longer route, the 6-day luxury gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking tour adds Nyungwe.
What Is Usually Not Included?
- International flights to and from Rwanda
- Visas; see East Africa visas
- Travel insurance with medical and evacuation cover
- Tips for guides, porters and lodge staff
- Some drinks, such as premium wines and champagne
- Extra activities not in the itinerary
- Personal items and laundry, unless the lodge includes them
What Should You Ask Before You Compare?
- Is the gorilla permit included, and is it in my name?
- Which lodges are used, and how many nights at each?
- Is the vehicle private for the whole trip, and does it come with a driver-guide?
- Are internal flights or helicopter transfers included?
- Which meals and drinks are covered?
- What is the cancellation and change policy?
- What happens if I cannot trek because of illness or weather?
A reply that cannot answer these in writing is a warning sign. See how to choose a gorilla trekking tour operator in Rwanda.
How Is a Luxury Package Different From a Standard One?
The trek and the permit are the same. The differences are the lodges, the privacy, the pace, the number of services and the number of extras. Our guide to luxury vs standard gorilla trekking in Rwanda compares them.
How Can You Customise a Package?
Most luxury packages can be adapted. Common changes are adding a night at a specific lodge, swapping the flight for a drive, adding Nyungwe or the Congo Nile Trail, or extending to Uganda or Tanzania. Tell your operator what matters to you before the quote. Read the best luxury eco-lodges in Rwanda to choose a lodge.
What Does a Typical Luxury Day Look Like?
The luxury part is mostly about how the day is arranged around the trek. A typical gorilla day starts with an early breakfast at the lodge, a short transfer to the Kinigi headquarters for the 7:00 briefing, and a private guide who stays with you on the walk. After the hour with the gorillas and the return, the vehicle takes you back to the lodge for a late lunch, a rest and, if you wish, a spa treatment or a short visit to a community project. Dinner is unhurried, and the next morning is left open. What you are paying for is the absence of waiting, packing and rushing, not extra activities.
How Do Packages Treat Meals, Drinks and Tips?
This is where offers differ most. Many high-end lodges are fully inclusive: meals, house drinks and lodge activities are in the nightly rate. Others charge drinks separately. Packages like ours list meals as per the itinerary. Ask whether wine and spirits are included, whether laundry is included, and whether a tipping guide for staff is provided. As a rule, tip the guide, the driver and the lodge staff at the end of each stay, and agree with your operator what is customary so that you are not guessing.
What Should You Expect From the Vehicle and the Guide?
A private vehicle should be clean, air-conditioned where the road allows, with seats for every guest at a window, and a driver-guide who has a licence, first-aid training and knowledge of the parks. The guide is often your point of contact for the whole trip, so ask who it will be and how long they have worked in Rwanda. Vehicles in Rwanda are generally 4x4 models that handle the road to the trailheads, which can be rough after rain.
Which Extras Are Worth Adding to a Luxury Package?
- The Dian Fossey hike. A full second day with a conservation story. It costs US$75 per foreign adult according to the RDB.
- Golden monkey tracking. US$100 for foreign adults, with a minimum age of 12.
- A private evening game drive in Akagera. A flight saves road time, as in our 5-day tour.
- A community or conservation visit. Our packages include one that shows where the tourism money goes.
- A day at Lake Kivu. A boat ride or a kayak outing is a gentle end to the trip.

How Do You Compare Two Luxury Quotes?
Put both quotes side by side and list the same items in each column: permit, nights and lodge names, vehicle and guide, flights, meals, drinks, park fees, extras and cancellation terms. Mark every item that is missing from one quote. Then look at the exclusions. A quote with a lower price but no permit, no flights or no drinks is not the cheaper option. Finally, ask each operator the same three questions: who is my guide, what happens if I cannot trek, and who do I phone at 6:00 on the day. The answers tell you more than the price.
What Happens If the Trek Does Not Go as Planned?
Gorilla families move, weather changes and travellers get sick. The RDB refund rules cover part of this: if you cannot find a family all day because it moved, you may get another chance or a full refund, and if you walked all day without contact, you may receive 75% of the tracking fee. Operators handle the rest, such as extra nights, changed transfers and lodge costs. Ask how your package deals with a missed trek, and take out insurance that covers medical problems, delays and evacuation. A luxury package should make these situations easier, not more complicated.
Idéal pour
- Honeymooners and couples
- Travellers who want a single price and a single contact
- Small groups who value flexibility
Peut ne pas être idéal pour
- Budget travellers, since a standard tour gives the same permit
What Mistakes Do Travellers Make With Packages?
- Comparing totals only. Compare inclusions.
- Not asking about the permit. Confirm it is included.
- Forgetting insurance. It is not in the price.
- Not allowing a rest day. Luxury does not mean tiring less.

Five to thirteen days, depending on the route.
Should I confirm what is included before I pay?
