What Is the Trek Like in Each Park?

In Bwindi you walk through thick forest on steep slopes, usually on narrow paths, sometimes cutting through vegetation. The trek can last from under an hour to six hours or more. The sector and the group decide the difficulty. In Mgahinga the trek crosses farmland and bamboo, on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, with open sections. Read the difficulty comparison in how difficult gorilla trekking is and the Uganda details in the Bwindi guide.

How Likely Are You to See the Gorillas?

In both parks, rangers and trackers locate the family before you arrive, and most treks succeed. The difference is that Mgahinga's single group sometimes moves across the border, and when it does, permits can be moved or changed. With Bwindi's many groups, the park can usually offer an alternative. If seeing gorillas matters most, Bwindi is the lower-risk choice.

What Else Can You Do in Each Park?

Mgahinga has golden monkey tracking, the Batwa Trail, which introduces the forest people who lived in the area, and hikes up Mount Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabinyo. Read golden monkey trekking: Rwanda vs Uganda. Bwindi has bird walks, community visits and the Batwa experience in some sectors, and it is only a day from Queen Elizabeth National Park. See the 6-day Mgahinga gorilla trek and golden monkey tour.

How Do the Seasons Affect Each Park?

The dry months, June to September and December to February, are best for both. Mud affects Bwindi more in the wet months, and Mgahinga's slopes can be slippery. Read the best time to visit Bwindi.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose Bwindi if you have five days or more, want the best chance of an alternative if the group moves, or want a bigger choice of lodges and sectors.
  • Choose Mgahinga if you have three or four days, want golden monkeys or volcano hikes, and accept the one-group risk.
  • Consider Rwanda if you have a very short trip or want a fast transfer; read Rwanda vs Uganda.

What Is It Like to Stay Near Each Park?

Near Mgahinga, most visitors stay around Kisoro, a small town with lodges and views of the three Virunga volcanoes. The setting is quiet, the climate is cool and the drive from the Rwandan border is short. Around Bwindi, you stay in a forest lodge that is part of a particular sector: a riverside or hillside lodge in Buhoma, a tea-field lodge in Ruhija, one of several in Rushaga, or a lodge on a ridge at Nkuringo. Evenings in Bwindi are often spent listening to forest birds and watching the mist, and the lodges tend to be more remote. Both options feel very different from the Rwandan side, where the lodges sit around farmland near Musanze.

What About the Batwa and Cultural Experiences?

Both parks work with the Batwa people, the former forest dwellers who were moved out when the parks were created. Visits with Batwa guides are offered in the Mgahinga area (the Batwa Trail) and around Bwindi, and they explain how people lived in the forest and how that way of life changed. Ask who benefits from the fee, and listen to the story as one told by the community. Our 3-day Bwindi gorilla trekking and Batwa cultural tour includes one.

How Do the Two Parks Compare for Photography?

In Bwindi, the forest is dark and the vegetation is thick, so you need a fast lens or a high ISO, and you often shoot through leaves. In Mgahinga, the bamboo and the more open slopes give brighter light but also longer distances. In both parks flash is not allowed and you must stay at the distance the rangers set. Our gorilla photography guide covers the settings and the etiquette.

What Do Rangers Do If the Mgahinga Group Crosses the Border?

The Nyakagezi group has at times moved into Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. When that happens, trekking can be suspended for a time, and the park either offers alternative activities, such as golden monkey tracking or a volcano hike, or advises you to rebook for another date. Ask your operator how they handle the risk before you commit, and consider choosing a trip length that gives you a spare day. This risk is the main reason why Bwindi, with its many groups, is the safer choice for travellers who must see gorillas on a particular date.

How Many Days Should You Plan for Each Park?

For Mgahinga, plan at least three days from the Rwandan border: one for the road, one for the trek and one spare day for the golden monkeys, a volcano hike or a delay. For Bwindi, plan four to five days if you start from Kigali or Entebbe, because the drives are longer and the trek can take most of a day. A spare day also protects you from bad weather, a late permit change or tired legs. If you have fewer days than this, Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is the more practical choice, and our 4-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour shows how little time it can take.

How Do You Match the Park to Your Budget?

The permit is widely reported at the same standard price in both parks, so the difference lies in the rest: transport, lodging and extra activities. Mgahinga can be cheaper to reach from Kigali but has fewer lodges. Bwindi has lodges at every price, from simple guesthouses to luxury camps, but the drives are longer. Low-season permits at a reduced price were announced for April, May and November, which helps either park. Read how much it costs to trek gorillas in Uganda.

Idéal pour

  • Bwindi: most travellers, birders, photographers and those wanting choice
  • Mgahinga: short trips and volcano lovers

Peut ne pas être idéal pour

  • Bwindi: travellers who dislike long drives or dense forest
  • Mgahinga: those who must see gorillas with certainty

Quelles erreurs les voyageurs commettent-ils ?

  • Choosing by name. Choose by time, route and fitness.
  • Booking Mgahinga without a plan B. Ask what happens if the group is across the border.
  • Underestimating Bwindi's terrain. Train for steep, wet ground.
  • Forgetting the cost of travel. Read the Uganda gorilla trekking cost.
