This 7 day Uganda gorilla trekking tour pairs one gorilla trek with a slow lakeside finish. You fly or drive from Entebbe to Bwindi, trek the gorillas in the forest, spend the next day on a Batwa cultural experience with community hosts, and then move to Lake Mutanda for two nights of rest with volcano views. Park fees, the gorilla permit, a porter, full board and a private 4x4 with fuel and a driver guide are included, and the flight home never depends on a tight connection.
The trip is shaped like a letter V. You go down into the forest for the gorillas, then climb out and rest. Day two takes you from Entebbe to Bwindi, by air to a nearby airstrip when one is available, or by road if not, and we plan for a rest on arrival either way. On day three you trek, and the family you are assigned depends on the sector where your permit is issued and on where the gorillas have moved. Day four is a Batwa cultural experience with community hosts. It is a conversation about forest life, not a performance, and we arrange it with a local group that has agreed the visit in advance. Read how to combine a Batwa cultural experience with gorilla trekking.

Then the pace changes. Lake Mutanda sits in the highlands of south-western Uganda with the Virunga volcanoes behind it, and the days there are for sitting by the water, taking a canoe if conditions are good and walking in the hills. Day six is a leisure morning, and we offer a guided walk or a community experience if you want one. See how booking a Uganda gorilla permit works and how many gorilla families are in Bwindi. Browse the gorilla trekking page and the Uganda destination page.
Moderate fitness is needed. Bwindi's forest is dense and steep, with mud, roots and altitude changes, and a trek can last two to six hours or more depending on where the family is. A porter is included and recommended. The Batwa experience and the lake days are easy, with uneven ground and some walking on village paths. You must be at least 15 to trek. If you have a health problem or limited mobility, tell us when you enquire so that we can plan around it. Read whether Bwindi or Mgahinga is better for gorilla trekking.

A domestic flight on a small plane.
June to September and December to February are the main dry seasons, with firmer trails and easier travel. The rains of March to May and October to November make the forest muddier and greener, and the permits are easier to secure. Gorilla trekking runs in every month. Read the best time to visit Bwindi for gorilla trekking for a month-by-month guide.
This tour suits travellers who want a single gorilla trek and time to enjoy the setting, including couples and small groups. It works well for people who do not enjoy fast-moving safaris. If you want to add chimpanzees and big game, see the 10-day Uganda primates and wildlife expedition. For a shorter version with a game drive, see the 5-day gorilla trek in Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth safari.
Gorilla permits are limited, so contact us early with your dates. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm accommodation once you book. If a domestic flight is not available on your date, we plan a road transfer with a rest stop and tell you in advance. Read what it costs to trek gorillas in Uganda.
