This 15 day private Tanzania and Rwanda safari starts on the plains and ends at a lake. You travel through Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, fly to Kigali, trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, and spend the last three nights at Lake Kivu. The trip is private throughout, with your own driver guide, and the international flight between the two countries is planned around a confirmed schedule, not assumed.
The structure is the point. Tanzania comes first, because the safari days are long and the vehicle is your base, and Rwanda comes second, because the gorilla trek is easier after you have adjusted to Africa and found a travelling rhythm. You enter the Serengeti on day six and have a full day on the plains, with a spare day on day eight in case the animals are elsewhere, then fly or travel on toward Kigali. Our guide to how to plan a luxury safari in Tanzania gives the background for the first half, and how difficult gorilla trekking in Rwanda is for the second.

Elephants at the end of the day.
Private means that nobody else is in your vehicle, and the pace is yours: you decide when to leave, how long to stay at a sighting and when to rest. The gorilla trek has a permit that is secured before you travel and depends on a confirmed date, so we ask for your dates first. After the trek, a day in Musanze and three nights at Lake Kivu close the trip, and the lake is where you rest. Browse the game drives and gorilla trekking pages, and the Tanzania and Rwanda destination pages.
Moderate, with one hard day. The Tanzanian game drives are from the vehicle, and nothing requires fitness, though there are several long road days. The gorilla trek is steep, muddy and at altitude, and lasts from one to several hours each way. There are two international and several domestic movements, so pack light for small aircraft. Tell us about any health condition and speak to a doctor about vaccinations and malaria before you go.

Los excursionistas observan a una distancia respetuosa.
June to October is the best overlap: Tanzania is dry and at its best for game viewing, and Rwanda's gorilla trails are firmer. January and February are also dry in both countries. The long rains from March to May make for green and quiet travel, with mud on the trails. The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti through the year, and we advise on the area for your month.
This tour suits couples, small families and friends who want a long, private trip with wildlife, gorillas and a rest at the end. For a shorter route, see the 10-day Rwanda gorilla trekking and Big Five safari in Tanzania. For a longer migration-focused version, see the 19-day gorilla trekking and Great Migration safari in East Africa.
Give us your dates first, so that we can secure the gorilla permit and check the connections. We advise on visas for both countries free of charge and confirm hotels and lodges after booking. Read whether Tanzania or South Africa is better for a luxury safari and the best things to do in Lake Kivu.
