Gorilla trekking with kids is allowed only from age 15. Rwanda and Uganda both set the minimum at 15, and rangers check ages at the briefing, so a younger child cannot join the trek even if a parent is willing to pay. Teenagers of 15 and older can go, as long as they are fit enough for a steep walk that may last four hours or more. For younger children, the sensible plan is to split the trip: parents trek in shifts or on different days while the children join other activities that suit their age.

This guide explains the rule, the reasons for it, what teenagers need to be ready, and what younger children can do while the rest of the family trek. Rules change, so confirm them with the park authority or the wildlife authority before you book. We checked the details in October 2026. It supports our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

¿Por qué la edad mínima es 15 años?

There are two reasons. The first is the gorillas' health. Mountain gorillas catch human illnesses such as colds, flu and some childhood infections very easily, and a respiratory illness can spread through a whole family. Young children are more likely to carry infections, and they are also harder to keep still and quiet next to a silverback. The second reason is the walk itself. The trek is steep, slippery and sometimes long, and the group cannot turn back easily once the family is found.

The park authority lists 15 years as the minimum for gorilla tracking and for the Dian Fossey tomb hike, and 12 for golden monkey tracking and the Musanze caves. You can read the full explanation in our guide to gorilla trekking age limits.

This is where good planning pays off. In Rwanda, children under 15 cannot trek gorillas, but several experiences are open to younger children and can fill the day:

  • Cultural visits. Dance, craft and village visits near Musanze are popular with children. Read about the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village.
  • Golden monkey tracking from age 12. The park authority sets the minimum at 12, so older children can join. See the golden monkey permit guide.
  • Safaris in Akagera. The park has game drives and boat trips where children can see hippos, giraffes and zebras. See our 6-day Akagera Big Five safari and Kigali city tour.
  • Easy lodge activities. Many lodges around Musanze can arrange guided farm walks, storytelling and swimming.

A few operators offer a babysitter or childcare at a lodge, but rules differ, so ask your tour specialist before you travel.

Many couples take turns. One parent treks on the first morning while the other stays with the younger children at the lodge, and the next day they swap, or the second parent does a different activity such as the Musanze caves. Remember that each trekker needs a separate permit, so plan the cost carefully. Permits are US$1,500 for foreign visitors in Rwanda and a lower price is advertised in Uganda. Read our guides to gorilla trekking cost in Rwanda and the gorilla permit.

Each trekker needs a permit, and the price is the same for a teenager as for an adult in Rwanda, s. For a family of four with two teenagers, that means four permits. Families sometimes decide that only the adults trek and the teenagers join other activities. Families with several teenagers may find the cost large, so ask about the low-season discount for trips from November to May that include a stay in Akagera or Nyungwe, as described on the park authority page, and compare the cost with the lower Uganda permit; see the Uganda cost guide.

How Can You Keep Teenagers Interested?

Teenagers respond to responsibility and to things that feel real. Let them research the gorillas, carry the camera, choose the lodge activity and learn a few words of Kinyarwanda. Give them a role in the trek, such as the family photographer or the person who keeps track of the time. Offer a second activity that suits their energy, such as cycling, a volcano hike or the Musanze caves. See what to do in Volcanoes National Park for ideas.

Ideal para

  • Families with teenagers of 15 and older who walk regularly
  • Families who want to combine one trek with cultural, farm or Akagera safari days
  • Parents who are happy to take turns with the trek

Puede no ser ideal para

  • Families with only young children, because none of them can trek
  • Teenagers with no interest in hiking, for whom the trek will feel like a hard day

¿Qué errores cometen las familias?

  • Booking permits before checking birthdays. The child must be 15 on the trek date.
  • Planning a tight schedule. After a long trek, families need an unrushed afternoon.
  • Skipping insurance. Medical and evacuation cover is essential.
  • Leaving the youngest with no plan. Arrange activities and care before you arrive.

Yes. Ages, fees and rules are set by the park authority and the wildlife authority and can change, so confirm them for your trek date before you pay.
