The best time to book an African safari is six to twelve months before you travel if you plan to go in the dry season, and as soon as you know your dates if you want gorilla permits or the best camps. Rooms in small lodges are limited, permits are capped each day and the best months sell out first. Booking early gives you choice, a better price and time to plan visas and health. Booking late works in the low season, but it narrows your options.
This guide explains how far ahead to book for Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, what sells out first and what happens if you book late. Rules and prices change, and the details were checked in October 2026.
What Sells Out First?
Three things go first: gorilla permits for the dry months, small luxury camps in prime locations and rooms in lodges near popular sites during the peak season. Permits are limited by park rules, not by price, so when a date is gone, it is gone. Small camps with eight to twelve rooms fill quickly because they have few beds. Large lodges and mid-range hotels are easier to find at short notice.
How Far Ahead Should You Book in Rwanda and Uganda?
Gorilla permits are the key. For June to September and December to February, book six to twelve months ahead, particularly for groups, because families of several people need permits for the same day. For the rainy months, March to May and October to November, a few months may be enough. Lodges near the parks fill around the permits. Read how to book a Rwanda gorilla permit and how to book a Uganda gorilla permit.
How Far Ahead Should You Book in Tanzania?
The Serengeti camps, especially those placed where the Great Migration crosses rivers, sell out up to a year ahead for July to October. Ngorongoro and Tarangire lodges also fill. For January and February, the calving season in the south, book six to nine months ahead. For the rains, three months may be enough. Read the Great Migration month by month to pick your month, and what to check before booking a Tanzania safari to compare quotes.
How Far Ahead Should You Book in South Africa?
The private reserves bordering Kruger fill from May to September, and the December holidays are very busy. Book six to twelve months ahead for the best lodges. Cape Town hotels and wine estates are busy from December to February. For the shoulder months, three to six months is usually enough. Read the best time to visit Sabi Sands to choose the month.
What Do You Gain by Booking Early?
Early booking gives you four advantages. First, choice: you get the lodge and the date you want. Second, price: some lodges offer early-booking rates, and fees can rise during the year. Third, time: you can arrange visas, vaccinations, flights and insurance without stress. Fourth, flexibility: if something changes, there is time to adjust. For a group or a family, early booking is almost essential.
What Happens If You Book Late?
It is possible, but expect compromises. The best dates for permits may be sold, so you may have to travel on a different day or in another sector. Favourite lodges may be full, and you may stay in a less convenient location. Prices are rarely lower at the last minute in the high season. Last-minute deals exist in the low season, particularly for lodges that have empty rooms. If your dates are fixed, contact us as soon as you know them.
Are There Low-Season Deals?
Yes, in some places. Lodges in the rainy months often cut their rates, and in Rwanda a seasonal discount on gorilla permits has been offered in the past for low-season travel under certain conditions. Offers change, so we check them for your dates. The trade-off is weather: more rain, muddy trails and some camps closed. For couples who accept this, low season can be restful and affordable. How Should You Plan the Booking Steps?
Use this order:
- Choose the country and the month.
- Secure permits, if your trip includes gorillas or chimpanzees.
- Book the key lodges and camps.
- Book flights once the dates are fixed.
- Arrange visas, insurance and health advice.
How Do Payments and Cancellation Terms Affect Timing?
Early booking means you pay a deposit sooner, and the balance is usually due some weeks before travel. Gorilla permits are normally paid in full at booking and cannot be refunded easily, so confirm your dates before you pay. Lodges have their own cancellation scales: the closer to travel, the larger the penalty. Ask for the terms in writing, and consider insurance that covers cancellation for reasons such as illness. Read our booking policy for how we handle payments, changes and cancellations.
What Should You Settle Before You Book?
A little thought saves a lot of change later. Agree on the dates with everyone in your group. Check that passports are valid for at least six months and have blank pages. Decide who will trek gorillas, since each person needs a permit and must meet the age and fitness rules. Think about your budget and how much driving you accept. Share any dietary needs. If you are unsure about any of these points, talk to us before paying a deposit, and we will walk through the options.
How Do You Book for a Group or a Family?
Groups need more lead time because permits and rooms are limited. For a family of six to eight, start at least nine to twelve months ahead for the dry months. Decide whether you want one vehicle or two, and whether children need family rooms or connecting rooms. Some lodges have rules about children on game drives, so check ages. Our family planning pages explain how to build a trip that works for mixed ages. Read gorilla trekking with family and family safari in Tanzania.
Should You Wait for a Deal?
In peak season, waiting rarely helps. Demand is high, and prices usually rise during the year. In the low season, a deal is more likely, particularly if you can be flexible about dates. Some lodges offer offers for stays of several nights, repeat guests or honeymooners. Rather than waiting, ask us about current offers for your dates, and we will tell you what is available. A fair price today is better than a hope of a cheaper one that sells out.
Which Travellers Should Book Earliest?
Best for booking early
- Gorilla trekkers and groups of four or more
- Travellers going in July to October or December
- Honeymooners who want a specific camp
More flexible
- Travellers visiting in the rainy months
- Those willing to change dates or lodges
What Should You Do if You Are Still Deciding?
If you are not ready to book, you can still take useful steps. Pick two or three possible months. Ask us for an outline quote for each. Check your passport and your leave. Ask your doctor about vaccinations. Read the guides for the countries you like. Then tell us the date range, so we can check permit availability without charge. This keeps your options open while you decide, and it shows you which dates are tight. Booking becomes a calm decision, not a rush.
How Do You Plan if Your Dates Are Fixed by School Holidays?
School holidays often fall in the busiest weeks, such as July, August and December. If your dates are fixed, book as early as you can, and be flexible about the order of places. Ask for family rooms and connecting suites early, because they are limited. Consider shorter stays in more popular areas and longer stays in quieter ones. Tell us your children's ages so that we can pick lodges with suitable policies. A family that books early usually gets the lodges it wants.
¿Qué errores cometen los viajeros?
- Booking flights first. Permits and lodges decide the dates.
- Waiting for a price drop. In peak season, it rarely comes.
- Forgetting group size. Several permits for one day need time.
- Skipping insurance. Protect your payments.
