The African safari honeymoon cost varies by a factor of three or four between a comfortable mid-range trip and a luxury one, and it depends on the country, the lodges, the season and the length. A mid-range seven to ten day honeymoon usually costs several thousand US dollars per person, and a luxury trip costs considerably more. The largest costs are lodging and, in Rwanda and Tanzania, fixed government fees. Understanding the pieces lets you decide where to spend on the moments that matter.

This guide explains what you pay for in Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and South Africa, what moves the total and how to build a realistic budget. Figures change, so we confirm current prices in every quote. They were checked in October 2026.

What Makes Up the Cost of a Safari Honeymoon?

Six items make up the total:

  1. Accommodation, usually the largest, from comfortable lodges to private suites.
  2. Park and permit fees, which are fixed by the authorities.
  3. Transport, a private vehicle and driver guide, plus any flights.
  4. Activities, such as balloon flights or private drives.
  5. Meals and drinks, which may be bundled.
  6. Extras, including tips, insurance and visas.

Two couples with the same dates can pay very different totals because of the lodges alone.

How Do the Four Countries Compare on Cost?

Ruanda

The gorilla permit is US$1,500 per person, which is the largest single fixed cost. Lodges range widely, and the top eco-lodges are among the most expensive in Africa. The country is compact, so transport costs less. A short trip is possible at a moderate cost per day, but the permit raises the total. Read how much gorilla trekking costs in Rwanda.

Uganda

Permits and lodges tend to cost less than in Rwanda, so Uganda often gives better value for a gorilla honeymoon, though roads are longer and some flights add cost. Read how much it costs to trek gorillas in Uganda.

Tanzania

Park fees in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are high, and luxury camps in prime locations are expensive. Flights between parks and a Zanzibar finish add to the total. Read how much a luxury safari in Tanzania costs and the Serengeti and Zanzibar cost.

Sudáfrica

Private reserve lodges are priced per person per night and are fully inclusive. Rates range from mid-range to very high. City hotels and wine estates add cost, and flights are modest. Read how much a luxury Kruger safari costs.

How Does the Lodge Level Change the Total?

Think of three levels. A comfortable mid-range honeymoon uses good lodges and a private vehicle, with a few special touches. An upper-range trip adds better locations, bigger rooms and some private activities. A luxury trip uses small exclusive camps, private guides and the best views. The same wildlife is on offer at every level; luxury adds comfort, privacy and location. Spend where it adds most, usually on a couple of key nights.

How Does the Season Affect the Price?

High season, roughly June to October and December to January, brings the highest rates and the best weather. Shoulder months, such as March, May and November, offer lower rates and fewer visitors. Low season brings rain and the lowest rates, with some camps closed. Moving the trip by a few weeks can save more than changing the lodge. Read the best time to book an African safari.

What Special Extras Do Honeymooners Pay For?

Common extras include a hot-air balloon flight, a private bush dinner, a spa treatment, a private guide and a sunset drink in a quiet place. Many lodges also add flowers, a cake or an upgrade for honeymooners. Some extras are free and some cost a lot, so ask early. Plan two or three special moments, not ten, and spread them through the trip.

How Can You Control the Budget?

Five choices help:

  • Travel in a shoulder month.
  • Choose one luxury camp for the key nights and comfortable lodges for the rest.
  • Fly only where it saves a full day.
  • Stay longer in fewer places.
  • Book early for the best rates.

Ask for two quotes, one with your ideal plan and one with a mix. That shows where the money goes.

What Does a Sample Seven-Day Budget Look Like in Each Country?

Think in lines, not totals. A seven-day honeymoon in Rwanda has a gorilla permit for two, four to five nights of lodging near the park and Lake Kivu, a private vehicle with a driver, meals and tips. The permit is the largest single line. In Uganda, the same shape is lower in cost, because the permit is lower, though you may fly to avoid a long road trip. In Tanzania, the largest lines are park fees, camps in the Serengeti and flights. In South Africa, the largest line is the nightly rate at a private reserve, with extra nights in Cape Town or the Winelands.

Ask for your quote in this form, so that you can see what each line is and change it.

Where Can You Save Without Spoiling the Trip?

Save on the nights that matter least. Spend heavily on one or two key nights, such as the night after the gorilla trek or the Serengeti camp near the river, and choose comfortable lodges for the others. Save on transport by driving the shorter legs. Save on timing by travelling in a shoulder month. Save on extras by choosing one special activity instead of three. Do not save on safety, guides or insurance. A skilled guide and a reliable vehicle protect the whole trip.

What Hidden Costs Do Couples Overlook?

The usual surprises are international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, tips for guides and staff, airport taxes on domestic flights, premium drinks, laundry, spa treatments and souvenirs. A hotel night at the start or end of the trip, because of flight times, may not be in the safari price. Check each of these in your quote. We list inclusions and exclusions clearly, so that you can compare us with any other offer. Read what to check before booking a Tanzania safari for a checklist that applies elsewhere.

Is It Cheaper to Book a Package or Piece Things Together?

A package with a single operator usually costs less and carries less risk, since the operator buys fees, lodges and transport in bulk and handles any change. Piecing things together can work if you have time and local knowledge, but small mistakes, such as a permit on a day you cannot reach the park, can be expensive. For a honeymoon, a single point of contact is a real comfort. We design the trip around your dates and your budget, and we explain every cost.

Who Is Each Budget Level Best For?

Best for mid-range

  • Couples who want a wonderful trip without the highest prices

Best for luxury

  • Couples who value privacy, service and location above all

May not be ideal

  • Couples on a very tight budget, who may prefer a shorter trip or a single country

What Is the Value of a Longer Stay?

A longer stay in fewer places often gives better value. Each move costs time and money in transfers and packing, and each new lodge starts with a rest. Four nights in one camp are usually more rewarding than two nights in two camps, and the cost per night often falls. For a honeymoon, a settled base also feels more relaxed. If your budget is limited, shorten the number of locations before shortening the number of nights. Ask us to compare a two-place and a three-place version of your trip.

How Should You Set Aside Money for Tips and Small Costs?

Tips are part of travel in East Africa and South Africa. Plan a daily amount for your driver guide and a shared amount for camp staff, usually paid in cash at the end of each stay. Add a small budget for souvenirs, drinks not included in the rate and laundry. A reserve of a few hundred dollars per couple covers most small costs. We give you a guide for each country, so that you can plan without worrying.

What Mistakes Do Couples Make When Budgeting?

  • Ignoring fixed fees. Permits and park fees are large.
  • Comparing nightly rates only. Inclusions differ.
  • Leaving out flights and tips. They add up.
  • Booking late. The best rooms sell out.
