The Dian Fossey hike cost is US$75 per adult for foreign visitors, according to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) booking page. The minimum age is 15. You report at the Kinigi park headquarters at 7:00, the full hike to the Karisoke research site takes about three to four hours, and the permit covers the entry and guided hike, not your lodge, your transfers or a porter. For most visitors the total spend is the permit plus the transport and a small tip, which makes it one of the best value activities in Volcanoes National Park.

This guide breaks down the fee, the extras, the timetable and the best way to combine the hike with a gorilla trek. Fees change, so confirm them with the RDB or your operator before you pay. We checked the details in October 2026. For the history and what you see at the grave, read Dian Fossey's grave in Rwanda: how to visit Karisoke, and for the wider plan see our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

The minimum age is 15. Residents must show at least four consecutive months of residency status or a work permit. Prices on the RDB page can change, so check them before booking.

What Else Should You Budget For?

  • Accommodation near Musanze. You will probably sleep near the park the night before. Prices range widely from guesthouses to luxury lodges.
  • Transport. The park drive from the headquarters to the trailhead takes about 30 minutes, and your road transfer from Kigali is about two to two and a half hours.
  • A porter. Optional, but helpful on slippery sections. The fee is small and supports local families.
  • Food and water. Take a packed lunch or snacks. Some lodges prepare them.
  • Tips. Rangers and porters are usually tipped at your discretion.
  • Insurance. Medical and evacuation cover is strongly recommended.

How Does the Timetable Work?

The RDB lists the following schedule:

  • 7:00: report to the Visitor Information and registration centre at Kinigi.
  • About 30 minutes: drive from the headquarters to the trailhead.
  • About 10 minutes: walk from the trailhead to the park boundary.
  • About one to one and a half hours: walk from the boundary to the Karisoke research site.
  • About three to four hours in total for the trek.

Allow most of the morning and some time to rest afterwards. Many visitors finish by early afternoon.

Is the Dian Fossey Hike Worth the Money?

If you are interested in conservation, yes. The hike gives you the story of the mountain gorillas, the work of the researchers who protected them and the cemetery where Dian Fossey and gorillas such as Digit are buried. You also walk in the upper montane forest and bamboo zone, with a chance to spot birds, duikers and sometimes golden monkeys. It is cheaper than a gorilla permit and demanding in a different way, since the trail is uphill and muddy.

If you only have a short time in Rwanda, choose the gorilla trek first. The hike is an excellent addition if you can spare a day. Compare other options in our 10 best hiking trails in Rwanda.

¿Qué tan difícil es la caminata?

The RDB notes that the hike requires a reasonable level of fitness. It is moderately strenuous: the trail climbs steadily, the ground can be muddy and the altitude is above 2,400 metres. Anyone who can climb stairs for half an hour and walk uphill for a few hours should manage. A porter and a walking stick help. If you are worried, compare the effort with gorilla trekking, which is similar in terrain but varies in length.

How Do You Combine the Hike With a Gorilla Trek?

The usual plan is to trek the gorillas on one day and hike to the grave on the next, because both start at 7:00. Our 4-day gorilla trekking and Dian Fossey hike follows that pattern. The 5-day luxury Rwanda safari includes a visit to the grave with a more relaxed pace. Do not schedule both on the same morning.

¿Cuándo es el mejor momento para ir?

June to September and December to February are the driest months, and the path is firmer. March to May and October to November bring more mud, but the hike still runs. Read our Volcanoes National Park guide and what to do in Volcanoes National Park.

Who Was Dian Fossey, and Why Do People Walk to Her Grave?

Dian Fossey was an American scientist who founded the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga volcanoes in 1967 and spent nearly 18 years studying and protecting mountain gorillas. She became known worldwide after the 1983 book Gorillas in the Mist, and she was found dead in her cabin in December 1985. She is buried at the research site, next to Digit and other gorillas killed by poachers. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund still runs Karisoke, and the permit fee you pay goes into the national park system. For the full story and a timeline, read Dian Fossey's grave in Rwanda: how to visit Karisoke.

What Do You See Along the Trail?

The walk begins on farmland, passes a stone wall at the park boundary and climbs into montane forest and then bamboo. Along the way, guides point out birds, signs of duikers, buffalo tracks and the plants that gorillas eat. Golden monkeys and, sometimes, gorilla nests or tracks may be seen. At the top, the old research camp site offers open views when the cloud lifts, and the cemetery is a quiet place. The mood is reflective rather than adventurous, so allow time to sit and listen to your guide.

What Should You Wear and Carry?

  • Waterproof hiking boots with good grip, because the trail is muddy.
  • Long trousers and a long-sleeved top against nettles.
  • A rain jacket and a warm layer; the saddle is above 3,000 metres and can be cold.
  • Water, snacks and a packed lunch if you will be out past noon.
  • A hat, sunscreen and a small camera or phone.

Our gorilla trekking packing list covers all of it.

How Does the Hike Compare With Other Hikes in the Park?

The Dian Fossey hike is shorter and less demanding than a volcano summit climb, but it is longer than the Musanze caves or a golden monkey walk. Mount Bisoke is a harder day with a crater lake at the top, and Karisimbi is a two-day climb. If you want one hike in addition to gorillas, choose the Dian Fossey trail for history and wildlife, or Bisoke for views. Our 3-day Mount Bisoke hiking tour shows the alternative, and 10 best hiking trails in Rwanda compares them all.

Ideal para

  • Conservation-minded travellers and fans of Gorillas in the Mist
  • Active visitors who want a second day in the park
  • Couples and small groups who like walking

Puede no ser ideal para

  • Children under 15
  • Travellers who cannot walk for three to four hours uphill

¿Qué errores cometen los visitantes?

  • Booking it on the same morning as the gorillas. Both start at 7:00.
  • Underestimating the mud. Waterproof boots matter.
  • Carrying too much. Take water, a rain jacket, snacks and a camera only.
  • Assuming the permit includes transport. Transfers are separate.
