Lake Bunyonyi: An Overview of Uganda’s Most Beautiful Lake

Lake Bunyonyi is one of Uganda's most beautiful lakes. It is located in the southwestern part of the country, near the border with Rwanda.

One of the first things visitors notices about Lake Bunyonyi is its striking natural beauty.  The name Bunyonyi originates from the local Rukiga language and translates to “place of many little birds", and yes they are. It is also made up of 29 islands surrounded by beautiful terraced hills.

The lake is popular for relaxation, canoeing, hiking, and as a peaceful stop after an affordable gorilla trekking experience in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

This name was given due to the remarkable abundance of bird species, with over 200 recorded species inhabiting the area surrounding the lake. Because of this, Lake Bunyonyi is widely regarded as a birdwatcher’s haven.

The lake is also known for its high altitude and significant, though debated, depth. It is believed to reach a maximum depth of about 900 meters (2,952 feet), which would make it the second-deepest lake in Africa.

Lake Bunyonyi sits at an altitude of approximately 1,950 to 1,962 meters (6,400 to 6,437 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest lakes in Uganda and giving it cool temperatures throughout the year.

Geologically, the lake is a flooded valley formed approximately 10,000 to 18,000 years ago when a lava flow blocked the Ndego River.

From Uganda: Most travelers pass through Kabale town in southwestern Uganda, which is about a 7 to 8 hour drive from Kampala.

From Kabale, the lake is only a 20 to 30 minute taxi or motorcycle ride, with common drop-off points such as Orutinda Market. For travelers who prefer to fly, Kisoro Airport offers a convenient alternative, followed by a short taxi ride to the lake.

From Rwanda: The journey from Kigali takes approximately 2 to 3 hours by road via the Katuna border post, making Lake Bunyonyi easily accessible to travelers from Rwanda.

The best time to visit Lake Bunyonyi is during the dry seasons, from June to September and from December to February.

During these months, the weather is sunny and dry, making activities such as swimming, canoeing, and hiking more enjoyable. Roads are also easier to navigate, allowing smooth access to the lake and its islands.

The wet seasons, from March to May and from October to November, bring more rainfall but transform the surrounding hills into lush and vibrant landscapes, making this period ideal for photography.

During heavy rains, roads may be more challenging, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Overall, Lake Bunyonyi is safe for swimming and exploration, with no crocodiles or bilharzia, and offers year-round opportunities for boating, hiking, and island adventures.

Is Lake Bunyonyi safe for swimming?
Definetly! However, due to its great depth, visitors are advised to exercise caution. But, Lake Bunyonyi is one of the few lakes in Uganda that is free from bilharzia, hippos, and crocodiles, making it safe for swimming. 

Are there any dangerous animals in the lake?
The lake does not have dangerous large wildlife such as crocodiles or hippos, making it safe for recreational water activities.
