This 14 day East Africa trip across Rwanda, Uganda and Zanzibar is built around people and places more than animals. You start in Kigali with a local guide and a food or coffee experience, spend time in Musanze, cross into Uganda for a gorilla trek in Bwindi and a quiet stay at Lake Bunyonyi, and then fly to Zanzibar for Stone Town, a spice farm and the beach. International flights are real logistics here, and the final routing depends on confirmed schedules.
This trip is for people who want the gorillas but would rather not make them the whole holiday. In Kigali you have a day with a local guide: a memorial for context, markets, a food or coffee experience and a walk through neighbourhoods. In Musanze you have a choice, golden monkeys if permits allow, or a locally hosted visit that shows how people live on the volcano slopes. Read how to experience Rwandan coffee from farm to cup and the best cultural experiences in Rwanda.

The Uganda days are slower. You cross the border and head for the Bwindi area, where you trek gorillas once, and then spend two nights at Lake Bunyonyi, with a community experience and an optional canoe. The trip then flies out of Uganda for Zanzibar, which is a different world: a historic coastal town, spice farms and sea. It is a long journey, with several transfers, and we say so openly. Read whether Entebbe is worth visiting before or after a safari for the airport stop, and how to visit Zanzibar for the finish. Browse the cultural experiences page and the Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania pages.
Moderate. The gorilla trek is steep and wet, and can last from one to several hours each way. Everything else is gentle, but the trip has long transfers, a border crossing, a domestic flight and an international flight. We allow rest days, and we keep tight connections out of the plan. If either the gorilla permit or the flights cannot be confirmed for your dates, we replace the trek with a suitable nature or community activity, and tell you before you book.

June to September is the best overlap: the gorilla trek is easier in the drier months, and Zanzibar's coast is dry and comfortable. December to February is also dry, though Zanzibar is hotter and more humid. March to May is the long rains, with fewer visitors, mud on forest trails and heavy showers on the coast. Tell us your month, and we will advise on the beach.
This tour suits curious travellers who want gorillas, culture and a beach in one trip, including couples and friends. It is not for those who dislike travel days. For a shorter Uganda and Rwanda trip, see the 12-day primate trekking safari in Uganda and Rwanda. For a longer private route, see the 15-day private Africa safari.
Tell us your dates early, so that we can secure the gorilla permit and check the flights. We advise on visas for each country free of charge and confirm accommodation after booking. Read how booking a Uganda gorilla permit works and how to plan an East Africa safari.
