| Region | Why go |
|---|---|
| Central Serengeti (Seronera) | Resident lions and leopards, easy to reach |
| Northern Serengeti | Mara River crossings in season, fewer vehicles |
| Southern Serengeti and Ndutu | Calving season, January to March |
| Ngorongoro Crater | Dense wildlife and black rhino |
| Tarangire | Elephants and baobabs, dry season |
| Zanzibar | Beach, spices and Stone Town after the safari |
With ten days you can usually visit two or three of these without rushing. Read Serengeti vs Ngorongoro: which is better for a first safari if you are unsure.
Step 4: Lodge or Tented Camp?
Lodges have walls, pools, spas and often larger rooms. Tented camps are canvas but can be very luxurious, and sit closer to the bush with fewer rooms. Mobile camps move with the herds, which helps in the migration months. For a first luxury safari, a mix of one or two lodges and a camp near the herds works well. Read the best luxury eco-lodges in Tanzania.
Step 5: Drive or Fly Between Parks?
Tanzania's northern parks are large and the roads can be long. Driving between Arusha, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti takes a full day for each leg, but you see wildlife on the way and save the flight cost. Flights between airstrips save time, especially from the Serengeti to the coast or Zanzibar, and they cost more and limit your luggage. Many luxury itineraries drive the first part and fly out of the Serengeti, as in our 14-day Great Migration safari with Zanzibar.
Step 6: Choose Privacy and the Guide
A private vehicle with a pop-up roof and your own driver-guide lets you decide when to leave, how long to stay with a sighting and when to rest. That is the biggest difference between a standard and a luxury safari. Ask about the guide's experience and languages, and whether the vehicle is shared with other guests at the camp.
Step 7: Add One or Two Special Experiences
- A hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti at dawn
- A walking safari with a ranger, which our 5-day tour with a Maasai cultural experience includes at Lake Manyara
- A Maasai visit with a local community
- A bush breakfast or sundowner in the plains
- A few days on Zanzibar to finish
Step 8: Check Health, Visas and Insurance
Visas, vaccinations, malaria prevention and travel insurance with medical evacuation cover are not optional. Read our East Africa visa guide and what to pack for a Tanzania safari, including luggage limits on small planes.
Step 9: Ask the Right Questions
- Where exactly is each lodge, and how far is it from the animals on my dates?
- Is the vehicle private for the whole trip?
- Which fees and meals are included?
- What are the flight weight limits?
- What is the change and cancellation policy?
What Does a Sample Ten-Day Luxury Plan Look Like?
| Days | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arusha | Arrive, rest and meet your guide |
| 2 to 3 | Tarangire | Elephants and baobabs; a gentle start |
| 4 | Ngorongoro highlands and crater | A morning on the crater floor |
| 5 to 8 | Serengeti (two bases) | Central plains, then the area where the herds are |
| 9 | Fly to Zanzibar | Move from the bush to the beach |
| 10 | Zanzibar | Rest and departure |
That plan uses three bases on safari, one flight and a beach finish. Our 6-day Zanzibar beach and Serengeti Big Five safari and the 12-day Tanzania parks safari and Zanzibar beach holiday follow the same logic in different lengths.
How Do You Choose the Right Guide?
The guide shapes the trip more than the lodge. A good guide reads the animals, knows the roads, explains what you are seeing and stays calm when plans change. Ask how long the guide has worked in the area you will visit, what languages they speak, whether they have first-aid training and whether they will stay with you for the whole trip. Ask also about the other guests: if you are in a private vehicle, the guide is yours; if the vehicle is shared, the pace is shared. Tip the guide fairly at the end, as is customary.
What Are the Health and Safety Basics?
- See a doctor or travel clinic early for vaccinations and malaria advice.
- Carry any regular medicine in your hand luggage, with a note from your doctor.
- Take insurance with medical and evacuation cover; flying doctor services are used in remote areas.
- Follow the guide's instructions at all times; keep your voice low, stay in the vehicle and never approach animals.
- Drink bottled or treated water and use sunscreen and insect repellent.
How Do You Handle Luggage Limits on Small Planes?
Small aircraft that link the airstrips have a weight limit, commonly about 15 to 20 kilograms per person including hand luggage, and bags must be soft. Pack light, use a soft duffel, and leave extras with your operator in Arusha or Dar es Salaam if you are returning there. Ask the lodge or airline about the exact limit before you pack, because charter companies enforce it. Our guide on what to pack for a Tanzania safari includes a list that fits.

- Travellers who prefer a low price; a mid-range private safari sees the same animals
Quelles erreurs les voyageurs commettent-ils ?
- Choosing too many places. Three bases is plenty.
- Booking late. The best camps sell out a year ahead.
- Ignoring luggage limits. Soft bags are required on small planes.
- Skipping insurance.

Combien de jours me faut-il ?
Seven to ten days for the northern parks, plus a few days on Zanzibar if you want a beach finish.
When should I book?
Nine to twelve months ahead for July to September.
Is luxury better for seeing wildlife?
Not necessarily. Location and guide matter more than the room.
Can I do a luxury safari with children?
Yes, with the right lodges. Read family safari in Tanzania.
Should I confirm lodge rates and flight rules before I book?
Yes. Rates, baggage limits and schedules change, so confirm them in writing with your operator for your dates.
