This 4 day Uganda shoebill safari is a short trip built around one bird and the wetlands near Entebbe. On day two you leave early for Mabamba Swamp and search for the shoebill from a canoe. On day three you spend the day with a birding guide around the Entebbe wetlands and other nearby habitats, and you keep the rest of the trip flexible. Everything is close to the airport, which makes it a good stand-alone trip or an add-on before or after a longer safari.
The shoebill is a large, slow-moving bird that stands in papyrus and lily-covered water and waits for fish, and Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is one of the best-known places to find it. Local guides paddle you through narrow channels in a canoe, which is the right way to approach the bird without disturbing it, and they have a good idea where the shoebills were seen in the last few days. We leave early, because the light and the activity are best soon after dawn. Our guide to whether you can see shoebills at Mabamba Swamp explains the odds, the best months and what the trip is like.

Day three is a different kind of birding. Entebbe has wetlands, botanical areas and the Lake Victoria shore, all within a short drive, and a guide can take you to habitats that suit your list: kingfishers and herons on the water, weavers and sunbirds in the gardens, and raptors overhead. You keep the afternoon flexible, because wetlands reward patience and the best hour is often late. Browse the wildlife activities and the Uganda destination page, and read about the things to do in Entebbe before a Uganda safari.
