Resumen

This 10 day Uganda primates expedition takes the south-western loop in one direction, so you never drive the same road twice. You track chimpanzees in Kibale on day three, game drive and cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park on days four and five, trek gorillas in Bwindi on day seven and rest on Lake Bunyonyi before flying or driving back to Entebbe. Park fees, both primate permits, a porter, full board and a private 4x4 with fuel are included.

What You Will Do on This Uganda Primates Expedition

The loop goes through four very different landscapes. Kibale is a forest of tall trees where chimpanzees feed and call. Queen Elizabeth National Park is open savannah, crater lakes and the Kazinga Channel. Bwindi is a steep, wet rainforest with the largest group of mountain gorillas in Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi is highland, terraced and calm. The order puts the most physical days apart: chimpanzees on day three, gorillas on day seven, and a rest day at the lake before the return. Read whether you can combine Kibale chimpanzee tracking with gorilla trekking for how the two treks compare.

Because the trip uses one direction of travel, the long drives are shorter than they look. We use a short break at Ishasha or the Kazinga Channel where it suits, and your driver guide stops for views. Day eight is at the lake for a reason: after a gorilla trek, most guests want a day to do nothing. See whether Kibale is the best place for chimpanzee tracking and how booking a Uganda gorilla permit works. Browse the chimpanzee tracking and gorilla trekking pages and the Uganda destination page.

How Hard Is the Expedition?

Moderate to good fitness is needed. You do two forest treks, each on steep, muddy ground, and several days of long driving. A porter is included for the gorilla trek, and we recommend using one. The game drives, boat cruise and lake days are easy. If you have a health problem, tell us when you enquire, because we brief the rangers so that treks are matched to the group. Best Time to Go

June to August and December to February are the main dry seasons, with easier trails and clearer weather. March to May and September to November are wetter, with mud in the forests and fewer visitors. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited in the dry months, so we recommend booking early. Read the best time to visit Bwindi for gorilla trekking.

Who This Trip Suits

This tour suits travellers who want both great apes in one trip and plenty of wildlife around them, including couples and friends who are comfortable with long drives. For a shorter trip, see the 6-day Uganda chimpanzee tracking and Kazinga Channel safari. For a version with Murchison Falls and Ziwa, see the 10-day Uganda gorilla trekking, wildlife safari and chimpanzees tour.

Plan Your Trip

Contact us early, because gorilla and chimpanzee dates are limited. We advise on visas free of charge and confirm lodges after booking. On the last day, we use a flight from a suitable airstrip if one operates; if not, we add a road day and advise a late departure. Read what it costs to trek gorillas in Uganda.
