An 8 day gorilla trekking safari gives you time for one gorilla trek and a good deal more: golden monkeys, chimpanzees, a savanna safari and time with local communities. You can do it in Rwanda alone, in Uganda alone or across both. Permits for international visitors cost US$1,500 in Rwanda and US$800 in Uganda under the standard tariffs (checked in October 2026), and groups are limited to eight visitors in each country.

This guide explains what each version looks like, which cultural visits fit around the trek, and how to choose. It supports our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Prices and rules change, so confirm them before booking.

What Can You Fit Into 8 Days?

Eight days allow one gorilla trek and three or four other major activities without constant travel. In Rwanda that usually means golden monkeys, a cultural village, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund campus and Lake Kivu or Akagera. In Uganda it means chimpanzees in Kibale or Kyambura Gorge, Queen Elizabeth National Park and a Batwa cultural visit. A two-country route is possible, but it involves a long road day and a border crossing.

What Does a Sample Rwanda and Uganda Route Look Like?

Our 8-day Rwanda and Uganda primate trekking and Akagera safari runs like this.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kigali, tea experience and drive to Nyungwe
  • Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe, then to Musanze
  • Day 3: Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund campus
  • Day 4: Golden monkey tracking, then Akagera for an evening game drive
  • Day 5: Early game drive, boat safari and the journey to Bwindi
  • Day 6: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi, then return to Kigali
  • Day 7: Kigali city tour and a coffee cupping
  • Day 8: Souvenirs and departure

For a longer route that starts in Kigali and ends in the same place, see the 9-day gorilla trekking and Murchison Falls safari.

What Does a Rwanda-Only Version Look Like?

If you prefer one country, the 8-day Rwanda cultural tour with birding covers culture and landscapes without a gorilla permit, and the 7-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour with culture and ReGreen centres on the trek. The first adds Mount Bisoke, the Twin Lakes and Lake Kivu. The second adds the Gorilla Guardians, tree planting and the royal forest of Buhanga.

Which Cultural Visits Pair Best With the Trek?

At Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, near the Volcanoes National Park gate, hosts, many of them former poachers, explain how the community lives with the forest, with dance, music and demonstrations. In Uganda, a Batwa cultural experience near Bwindi introduces the forest people who lived in the area before it became a park. Both visits are a chance to ask questions and to see where tourism income goes. Read our guide to cultural experiences in Rwanda and how ecotourism is changing Rwanda.

How Much Does an 8 Day Gorilla Safari Cost?

It depends on the route. The permit is the largest single item: US$1,500 in Rwanda and US$800 in Uganda for international visitors, which our tours include. Our two-country 8-day tour was priced at US$5,241 per person at the group rate and US$7,241 for a solo traveller in October 2026. Compare the Rwanda budget in how much gorilla trekking costs in Rwanda. Tips, drinks, visas and flights are usually extra.

When Is the Best Time for an 8 Day Gorilla Safari?

The drier months, June to September and December to February, make for the easiest treks in both countries. Treks run all year, and the wetter months are quieter and greener. Permits sell out in the dry months, so book several months ahead. Read the Rwanda vs Uganda comparison and the Bwindi guide before you choose.

Best for

  • Travellers with a week and a bit who want gorillas plus other primates
  • Couples and families with teenagers aged 15 and over
  • Travellers who want culture and conservation alongside wildlife

May not be ideal for

  • Travellers who dislike long road days. The two-country route has several.
  • Families with children under 15, who cannot trek gorillas (see the age limit guide)

What Mistakes Do Travellers Make With 8-Day Safaris?

  • Packing in too much. Choose a trek and three or four extras, not ten.
  • Underestimating border time. Allow extra time for the Rwanda and Uganda crossing.
  • Booking late. Both countries limit permits.
  • Ignoring recovery days. Treks are tiring.
  • Not asking what is included. Check permits, transfers and meals.
