Yes, Murchison Falls is worth visiting on a Uganda safari, especially if you want more than gorillas. It is Uganda's largest national park, with a dramatic waterfall where the River Nile squeezes through a gap of about seven metres and drops around 43 metres, a boat trip to the base of the falls through hippos and crocodiles, game drives for elephants, giraffes, buffalo and lions, and, with luck, the shoebill in the Nile delta. It is not the best choice for travellers who only have a few days or who want a rhino or a large number of predators in one drive, but it adds a different side of Uganda to a gorilla trip.
Below we describe what you actually do, how long to stay, when to go and how it compares with Queen Elizabeth National Park. Fees and conditions change, so confirm them with your operator. We checked the details in October 2026. This guide supports our comparison Queen Elizabeth vs Murchison Falls.
What Is There to See at Murchison Falls?
The falls
You can see the falls from the top, on a short walk from the car park, and from the water below. At the top, the Nile pushes through a narrow cleft with a loud roar. At the base, you see the cascade from a boat. Both views are worth having, and they are very different.
The boat trip
The launch from Paraa takes you up the Nile toward the falls. You pass hippos, crocodiles, water birds and animals drinking on the bank. It is a calm, relaxed trip of a few hours and one of the best-value activities in Uganda for photographers.
Game drives north of the Nile
Gorillas live in the south-west and Murchison is in the north-west, so combining them takes time. A typical trip flies or drives between them. Our 10-day Uganda gorilla trekking, wildlife safari, chimpanzees and culture tour and the 9-day gorilla trekking, chimpanzees and safari in Rwanda and Uganda link them. Read how to book a Uganda gorilla permit first.
What Is the Best Way to See the Falls?
Do both views. The boat trip from Paraa takes about three hours return and ends at a point below the falls, where you see the cascade from the water and often hippos and crocodiles on the way. The walk to the top of the falls takes you to the narrow gap where the Nile is squeezed, with spray and a roar that you feel in your chest. The two views are very different, and together they take about half a day. Choose the morning for the boat, when the light is soft and the animals are active, and the walk when you want a break from the vehicle.
What Does a Day at Murchison Look Like?
A typical day starts with a dawn game drive north of the Nile, when the light is good and the lions and elephants are active. You return for breakfast, then take the boat trip in the late morning. After lunch and a rest, a second drive or a walk to the top of the falls fills the afternoon. Dinner is at the lodge, and some lodges arrange a night drive. It is a day of different activities, with no single long walk, which makes it a good choice for families and older travellers.
Which Animals Can You Expect?
- Elephants in herds along the river and the savanna.
- Giraffes in large numbers on the northern plains.
- Buffalo, hippos and crocodiles along the Nile.
- Lions, seen fairly often, and leopards occasionally.
- Antelope such as Uganda kob, waterbuck and hartebeest.
- Birds, including the shoebill in the delta, which many visitors hope to see.
Lion numbers and sightings vary by season, so ask your guide about recent sightings. For rhinos, you can visit the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way; see the 6-day Murchison Falls safari.
How Do You Get There, and How Long Does It Take?
The park lies in the north-west of Uganda, and the drive from Kampala is a long day, often eight hours or more depending on the route and the road. Some visitors fly to an airstrip in or near the park to save time. If you drive, a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary breaks the journey. Allow at least two nights in the park and a spare half day for the transfers. If you also want gorillas, which are in the south-west, plan a longer trip or a flight between the two, as our 10-day Uganda route does; see 10-day Uganda gorilla trekking, wildlife safari, chimpanzees and culture.

- Photographers, birders and families
- Anyone adding a safari to a gorilla trek

- Those who want rhinos or very dense predator sightings in the park itself
¿Qué errores cometen los visitantes?
- Staying only one night. Two is the minimum.
- Skipping the boat trip. It is the highlight for many.
- Underestimating drive times. The roads are long.
- Forgetting the dust and sun. Bring a hat and a light layer.
