To see the Big Five in Tanzania, combine the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti gives you lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, and the Ngorongoro Crater is the best place in northern Tanzania to look for black rhino, which makes it the key to completing the set. Tarangire National Park adds some of the largest elephant herds in the north, and Lake Manyara National Park is a short, scenic stop. A route of seven to ten days that includes the crater and at least two full days in the Serengeti gives a good chance of four of the five, and a fair chance of the rhino, though no operator can promise all five.

This guide shows what each park offers, how to build a route, when to go and what to expect from each of the five animals. Wildlife numbers change, so ask your operator for recent sightings. We checked the details in October 2026. For the cost side, see how much a Big Five safari in Tanzania costs.

These ratings are general and based on typical sightings, not guarantees. Rhinos are heavily protected and often far from the road, so they are the hardest to see, together with the leopard.

Why Is the Serengeti the Core of a Big Five Safari?

The Serengeti covers about 14,750 square kilometres of plains, kopjes and rivers. Lions are easy to find, buffalo are everywhere and elephants are present in several areas. The Seronera area in the central Serengeti is known for leopards in the riverine trees, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Our Serengeti safari guide covers the regions, and Serengeti vs Ngorongoro: which is better for a first safari helps you decide how to split your days.

Why Does the Ngorongoro Crater Matter for the Rhino?

The crater is a large volcanic caldera with a wall about 600 metres high and a floor with grassland, a lake and a forest. Because the animals live in one enclosed space, you can see lions, buffalo, hyenas and many others in a single morning, and it supports a small population of black rhinos. They are usually seen at a distance, so binoculars matter. The crater has a per-vehicle fee and a limit on the time you can stay, so an early start is useful. Our 11-day Tanzania Big Five safari and Maasai cultural tour spends a full day on the crater floor.

What Do Tarangire and Lake Manyara Add?

Tarangire has baobab trees, a river that draws elephants in the dry season and large herds of buffalo. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to watch elephants at close range. Lake Manyara is a smaller park with a groundwater forest, a lake and the Rift Valley escarpment. It is good for a half-day or a walking safari and for variety, though it is less important for the Big Five. Many northern circuit itineraries start with these two parks to ease you in.

When Is the Best Time for the Big Five?

The dry season, from about June to October, is best for game viewing in general, because animals gather at water and the grass is shorter. January to March is excellent in the southern Serengeti, where calving draws predators. The long rains, from about March to May, are green and quiet, with lower prices, though some roads get hard. Read the Great Migration month by month to link the Big Five with the herds.

How Does Tanzania Compare With Other Big Five Countries?

Tanzania offers huge parks and a high density of lions and buffalo, and it is the best of the East African options for the rhino in the crater. South Africa has more reliable rhino sightings in private reserves, and Rwanda's Akagera is small but quiet. Compare them in Big Five safari: Tanzania or South Africa, the best park for the Big Five in South Africa and can you see the Big Five in Rwanda.

How Do Guides Find Leopards and Rhinos?

Leopards are solitary and mostly active at dawn, dusk and night, and they rest in trees or thick cover during the day. Guides check large trees near rivers, listen for alarm calls from monkeys and birds, and share sightings by radio. In the central Serengeti, the Seronera river is the best place to start. Rhinos in the crater are watched by rangers and can be anywhere on the floor, so guides scan the long grass and the edge of the forest. In both cases, patience and good binoculars matter more than speed.

Is the Southern Circuit Worth Considering for the Big Five?

Tanzania's southern parks, including Nyerere (Selous) and Ruaha, are less visited and offer boat safaris, walking safaris and large lion and elephant populations. They have fewer rhinos than the crater, and they are harder to reach, usually by small plane. They suit travellers who have visited the northern circuit before, or who want fewer vehicles. For a first Big Five trip, the northern circuit remains the practical choice because it combines the crater, the Serengeti and good roads and lodges.

How Many Game Drives Should You Plan?

Plan at least eight to ten game drives in the Serengeti and the crater to give yourself a fair chance of all five. A full day in the crater counts as two drives. In the Serengeti, plan two full days with a morning and an afternoon drive each. Add the Tarangire days for elephants and variety. The number of drives matters more than the number of parks, so choose fewer parks and more time in each if you must choose.

What Should You Bring for the Big Five?

  • Binoculars, ideally 8x42, for rhinos and leopards at a distance.
  • A camera with a long lens, or a phone with a good zoom.
  • Neutral clothing, a hat, sunscreen and a warm layer for dawn drives.
  • A notebook or a checklist of animals.
  • A soft bag for flights.

Ideal para

  • First-time safari visitors who want variety in one trip
  • Photographers, families with older children and couples

Puede no ser ideal para

  • Travellers who need to see a rhino and a leopard for certain; no park can guarantee either
  • Visitors with fewer than five days

¿Qué errores cometen los visitantes?

  • Skipping the crater. It is your best chance at a rhino.
  • Spending only one day in the Serengeti. The park is huge.
  • Expecting all five on a short trip. Allow seven days or more.
  • Forgetting binoculars. Rhinos and leopards are often far away.
