The cost of a Serengeti safari and Zanzibar holiday depends on six things: the number of safari days, the level of lodge, the season, whether you drive or fly between parks, the days on the island and how many people share the vehicle. A mid-range ten-day trip and a luxury fourteen-day trip can differ by several times in price, while the wildlife and the beach are the same. Understanding the parts lets you choose where to spend and where to save.

This guide explains what you pay for, how the season and the lodge tier change the total, and how to build a budget. Prices change, so we confirm the current figures in every quote. They were checked in October 2026.

What Makes Up the Cost of the Safari Half?

A safari has four large costs. First, park and conservation fees, which are charged per person per day and are the same for everyone. The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are among the highest in Africa, and they are the main reason a Tanzania safari costs more than many people expect. Second, lodging, which varies from simple tented camps to luxury lodges with a pool. Third, a vehicle with a driver guide, usually charged per day and shared by the group. Fourth, meals, drinks and activities, often bundled in a nightly rate.

The number of nights in the Serengeti affects the total most, because the daily fees and the lodges there cost more than elsewhere. Read how much a Great Migration safari costs and how much a Big Five safari in Tanzania costs for the safari side in detail.

What Makes Up the Cost of the Zanzibar Half?

Zanzibar has a broader range. Simple beach guesthouses and boutique hotels cost far less per night than luxury resorts, and the same flight and transfer apply to each. The main variables are the coast, the room type, the meal plan and the activities. Snorkelling trips, spice tours, a Stone Town walk and diving add to the total, and many resorts offer half-board or all-inclusive plans.

Four or five nights on the island is typical after a safari. Adding a night costs less than the transfer to reach it, so a longer stay is often better value per day. Read how to visit Zanzibar for the choices on the island.

How Do Flights Between the Serengeti and Zanzibar Affect the Budget?

You can fly from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar, or drive back to Arusha and fly from there. Flying saves a long day and gives you an aerial view, and it costs more. Scheduled flights are charged per seat with a baggage limit of about 15 to 20 kilograms in a soft bag. A charter is far more expensive because you pay for the aircraft. For most travellers, one flight from the Serengeti to the coast is the most useful, and driving the other legs keeps the cost under control.

The international airport at Arusha or Kilimanjaro is the usual start. Check flight times, and allow a buffer on the day you leave the Serengeti.

How Much Does the Season Change the Price?

The seasons affect both halves. The high season runs from late June to October, with a second peak from late December to February. Rates at lodges and camps are highest, and the best rooms sell out a year ahead for August and September. April and May are the low season, with lower rates and, on the island, heavy rain. Shoulder months such as June, early November and March can lower the price noticeably while keeping decent weather.

If your budget is fixed, moving the trip by a few weeks may save more than changing the lodge. Read the best time to visit Zanzibar for the island and the Great Migration month by month for the Serengeti.

How Do Lodge Tiers Change the Total?

Think of three tiers:

  • Comfortable mid-range. Eco-lodges and permanent tented camps with good food and clean rooms. This is the best value for most travellers.
  • Upper-range. Larger lodges and camps with better locations, more space and more service.
  • Luxury. Small camps with private vehicles, high service and prime positions. Prices are far higher.

Where luxury adds the most is location, not the size of the room. A camp in the right place saves hours of driving. Read how much a luxury safari in Tanzania costs for details.

What Does a Ten to Fourteen Day Trip Look Like?

A balanced ten-day trip has five to six safari days and four nights on the island. A twelve-day trip adds Tarangire and Ngorongoro. A fourteen-day trip gives you the Serengeti time to wait for the herds. The more days in the Serengeti, the higher the cost. See the 10-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar beach holiday, the 12-day Tanzania safari and Zanzibar and the 14-day Great Migration safari with Zanzibar for the structure of each. For a shorter trip, the 6-day Serengeti, Big Five and Zanzibar tour is an option.

How Can You Keep the Cost Under Control?

Five choices help the most:

  1. Travel in a shoulder month.
  2. Share the vehicle with a group of four.
  3. Fly only where it saves a full day.
  4. Choose comfortable mid-range lodges for most nights and luxury for one or two.
  5. Book early, since good rooms sell out.

Ask for two quotes: your ideal trip and a mixed version. That shows where each dollar goes and what you give up by changing a night.

How Do Group Size and Private Versus Shared Safaris Change the Price?

A private safari charges the full cost of the vehicle and driver to your party, so the price per person falls as the group grows. A couple pays more per person than a group of four. A shared safari places you in a vehicle with other travellers, at a lower price but with a fixed timetable. The beach half of the trip is less affected by group size, since rooms are priced per room. Families can reduce the cost per person by sharing a family room or a connecting suite. Ask for quotes for your actual group size.

Is Zanzibar Better Before or After the Safari?

After is usual and easier. Safari days start early and include dusty drives, so the beach is a reward. Flying from the Serengeti or Arusha to Zanzibar on the last day takes only a few hours with a good schedule. Doing Zanzibar first is possible if your international flight arrives there, but you start the safari tired from the beach. The cost is the same either way. Check airline schedules, since flights to Zanzibar are not available every day from every airport.

What Extra Activities Add to the Cost?

On safari, extras include a balloon flight, a walking safari, a night drive in permitted areas and private guides. On Zanzibar, extras include a dhow cruise, diving, a spice tour, a Stone Town guide and a spa treatment. Choose the two or three that matter most, and skip the rest. Extras can double the daily cost if added without thought. We list them separately in the quote, so that you can decide.

How Do Exchange Rates and Payments Work?

Safari prices are normally quoted and paid in US dollars. Card payments may carry bank fees, and some lodges charge a surcharge for cards. Bank transfers are the cleanest way to pay the balance. Keep some cash in small US notes for tips. Tell your bank before you travel to avoid card blocks. If your home currency moves against the dollar, your cost changes, so lock in payments when the rate suits you. We explain the payment options in your quote.

Who Is This Trip Best For?

Ideal para

  • Honeymooners and couples who want wildlife and rest
  • Families who want a beach after the early safari starts
  • Travellers with ten to fourteen days

Puede no ser ideal para

  • Budget travellers who need to spend less than a mid-range trip
  • Visitors who want only the beach or only the safari

What Mistakes Do Travellers Make When Budgeting?

  • Counting the nightly rate only. Fees, flights and tips add up.
  • Ignoring the season. A month can change the price.
  • Flying every leg. Drive the short ones.
  • Skipping the written inclusions. Ask what is bundled.
