A Rwanda gorilla permit costs US$1,500 per person for international visitors (checked in October 2026). Permits are limited each day, they are tied to a named person and a date, and they are generally not refundable. For that reason, book as soon as your dates are firm, and several months ahead if you want to trek between June and September or between December and February.
This article explains what the permit covers, how many are available, how to book one, and what happens if your plans change. It is part of our complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
Was beinhaltet eine Rwanda Gorilla‑Erlaubnis?
The permit gives you a place in one gorilla group for one day. It covers park entry, the guided trek with rangers and trackers, and a maximum of one hour with a habituated gorilla family. It does not cover lodging, transport, meals, your visa, travel insurance, tips or a porter. Our article on the full cost of gorilla trekking in Rwanda shows what to budget around the permit.
Part of every permit funds the rangers and trackers who protect the gorillas. In addition, the park authority shares 10 per cent of park tourism revenue with communities around the parks.
Each group is limited to eight visitors, and each habituated gorilla family is visited by one group a day. The booking page lists ten habituated families open to visitors, which means about 80 permits a day. Older articles quote 96 permits, which was based on twelve families, so check the current number with the park authority or your operator when you plan. Whatever the exact figure, the supply is fixed and demand in the dry months is high.
| Visitor category | Permit price |
|---|---|
| International visitors (foreign non-residents) | US$1,500 |
| Rwandan and East African citizens | US$200 (promotional) |
| Foreign residents in Rwanda, African citizens and foreign residents in Africa | US$500 (promotional) |
The promotional rates are listed by the park authority until the end of December 2026 and do not apply from June to October 2026. The international rate does not change with the season. These figures were checked in October 2026, and fees can change, so confirm the current rate before you pay.
Wann sollten Sie eine Gorilla-Genehmigung buchen?
Sobald Ihre Daten feststehen.
- Choose your trek date and group size. Check lodge availability near Musanze at the same time.
- Book through a licensed tour operator such as us. An operator handles the permit, the lodge and the transfers together, and confirms the booking in writing.
- Give each traveller's details exactly as they appear in the passport. The permit is issued to a named person.
- Pay to confirm. The permit is not secure until it is paid for and confirmed.
- Bring your passport on trek day. You report to the park office in Kinigi at 7:00 a.m. and your details are checked.
You can read how the day itself works in our gorilla trekking guide.
Was passiert zwischen Zahlung und Trekking-Tag?
Most travellers think a permit is a ticket that arrives by email and is then forgotten. In practice the booking passes through several checks, and knowing them explains why accuracy matters more than speed.
The park authority's system is first come, first served. When an application is made, the traveller's category is part of it: international visitor, foreign resident, Rwandan or East African citizen. The category decides the price, and it is verified against documents at the park entrance. The park authority states that incomplete or inaccurate applications, false identity documents or visas, and expired documents can lead to denied entry even when the permit has been paid for. A booking made under the wrong category, for example a resident rate for someone whose residence status cannot be shown, is the commonest way a paid permit becomes unusable.
On the morning, you report to the park authority tourism office in Kinigi at 7:00 a.m. Your name is checked against the passport, and rangers then divide the arriving visitors into groups of no more than eight and assign each group to a gorilla family. The assignment is made that morning, not when you book. This is why no operator can promise a particular family and why a permit is best thought of as a place in a group on a given day.
| Wann | Was zu tun |
|---|---|
Benötigen andere Aktivitäten auch eigene Genehmigungen?
Yes, and this surprises many first-time visitors. The gorilla permit covers gorilla tracking only. Golden monkey tracking has its own permit, and the park authority lists a fee of US$100 for international visitors and a minimum age of 12. The hike to Dian Fossey's grave, the climbs of Mount Bisoke and Karisimbi, and chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk in Nyungwe are booked and priced separately. If you plan a package of several, ask your operator to confirm in writing which permit covers which day. A trip that has one gorilla permit and three activities needs four separate confirmations.
Plan on the basis that a permit is not refundable. The park authority generally does not refund a permit when a traveller cancels, and travellers who ask are usually offered a new date, depending on availability, instead. Rescheduling is decided by the park authority, not by the operator, and the new date depends on what is free. Terms differ between operators, so ask for the cancellation and rescheduling rules in writing before you pay, and check whether your travel insurance covers a non-refundable permit.
If you are ill on trek day, rangers may stop you from trekking to protect the gorillas. Ask your operator and your insurer how this is handled before you travel.
Because permits are scarce and expensive, they attract scams. A few simple tests protect you.
- Ask for the booking reference. A genuine seller can tell you what has been reserved, for which date and under which category, and can show you the confirmation.
- Check the company. A licensed Rwandan operator will give its registration details and a street address, not only a messaging account.
- Be wary of unusual discounts. The international price is US$1,500 in every month. An offer far below that is either a resident or citizen rate, which you cannot use, or a scam.
- Pay in traceable ways and keep every receipt.
- Ask what happens if the date cannot be kept. A professional seller can describe the park authority rescheduling process without hesitating.
Was sollten Sie tun, wenn sich Ihre Pläne ändern?
Plans change because of illness, flight cancellations and work. Three habits make a change less painful. First, contact your operator immediately, because the park authority handles rescheduling by request and availability on the new date matters. Second, check your travel insurance for cover of non-refundable costs and for the circumstances it accepts, such as medical certificates. Third, keep a spare day in the itinerary, so a flight delay does not cost you the trek.
If you fall ill on the trek morning, tell the ranger. Rangers can refuse entry to protect the gorillas, and an honest report is better than trekking sick. For the broader picture of what the day involves, see the complete guide to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
Für internationale Besucher gilt ja: US$1,500 in jedem Monat.
No. A Rwanda permit is for Volcanoes National Park only. Uganda sells its own permits through the wildlife authority. See our Rwanda versus Uganda comparison.
Your passport and your permit confirmation. Documents are verified at the park entrance, and the park authority states that false or expired documents can lead to denied entry.
